Clean it well and use a heat gun to remove the sticky
sound deadening stuff, it's a pain but doable, then
spray it with a gun, don't use spray cans, not thick enough
and the cost is high

I used herculiner (sp?), and then put on two coats of enamel to fill the crevices.  I was not impressed with the liner, it holds mud and dirt like mad.  I have also wore through the liner where my heel rests.  It is nice to just pull the plug and wash it out.  When I was running in the snow and mud, I just left the plugs out.  Didn't seem to pick up much from the underside, just from my boots,

Sounds like we might be better off with a bare steel floor and some floor mats or something.  I guess it all depends on how muddy you plan on getting.    ;D

When I did some rust repair.....I took the carpet out and cleaned it...patched up the floor and painted it, then put my carpet back in.   I like my carpet just fine.  It doesnt hold water because I have the plugs out, and I can just take the carpet out to clean it if it gets too dirty for my liking.
