does anyone have a picture of half doors on a sidekicke?
how would i make them?
thanks :-/
-
There've been pics posted here before... I don't have any.
Making them just takes some cutting and some welding :)
-
Someone some time ago mentioned they could make those half doors. Thats all my foggy memory could recall ;D I would love one of those tube half doors ;D
But then again, It doesn't do much for keeping the dust and dirt out ;D

Going up this weekend to TSF for the wheeling and keg party, ya going or fixing the kick?
-
I'm picking up a set of used doors tonight. Going to set about them with the angle grinder ;D Only minor problem I have is that the stock hinge pins look like some sort of rivet - more work for the grinder.

Fixen :-/
Going to go up to Detriot Lake next weekend for a camping/triail ride with the Salem club (Mid Valley Rockcrawlers );D
Fixed one bearing and decided to check the other one :o
Dry as a bone. must have gotten really wet or something :-/  I'm sure it got greased when I put new ones in last year, I think.

I picked up the doors last night this evening I took off my existing doors and after grinding the heads off the pins (rivetted) knocked them out. Now I have learnt just how easily the part of the hinge that bolts to the door can bend  :( and just how difficult it is to straighten them  :( :( After 3 1/2 hours I have got one set of hinges modified with the removable pin through them (luckily the used doors still had the hinges attached and had the removeable pins  :D
I've got the trim off the used door and removed the glass. There is a hefty looking bar running along the door, pic below:

I'm going to cut above this as it seems like a good idea to retain the impact protection. It should look something like this:

Unless I respray it myself in which case it won't look so tidy, lol. I'm going to cut some metal tomorrow. at the front I'm going to bring a line down following the metal work around the mirror which will be retained. At the back it will kick up to go around the lock and blend in with the line on the bodywork.

Started cutting the metalwork:

One thing I've always wondered about 'kick half doors (and one reason I haven't started chopping up one of my parts Tracker doors) is how the latching mechanism works after you cut it up? Do you just install some sort of latch of your own on it, or can you use the existing latch by re-working the linkage?

The existing latch is secured to the door frame and remains. There are a few steel rods coming off of it for the locking mechanism, the external release and the internal release. I just removed the rods I didn't need, I will have to make up a new internal release or relocate the existing handle (most likely option).

I hope you're taking lots of pics.

Rhinoman,
Please keep us updated on this. I have been wanting to do this same thing with the doors off my parts Tracker but have not had time to look into it.

heres another pic of half doors. they are on a Sammi but just thought it would help someone? (doors are at bottom of page) http://www.msdra.com/Fordzuki.htm

Looks a lot easier on a Sammi

I too have been wanting to do this. I was planning to cut down then angle back up just above the stock door handle to simplify things. That way I wouldn't have to fabricate latches and such, but it might not be quite as cool, and could look odd with the angles. Any thoughts?

Here's some photoshop visualizations I came up with...
Stock:

Variation 1 (stock handle):

Variation 1 with lines of stock door to show removal area:

Variation 2 (custom latch/handle):
Variation 3 (Like 1, but rounded a bit):

I started to really like #1 after looking at it a while. It really would make a pretty decent difference, and being able to use the stock handle/latch/hardware would be a really nice benefit.

I've binned the outer handle. Its easy enough to reah inside and open it with an inside catch. Besides I want to be able to jump in and out without opening the doors ;D ;D so I cut mine down as low as I could whilst still retaining the side impact bar. I haven't cut the first door quite right though so I will have to make good a little, the line will go across where the old external latch was. I'm going to line the interior with sheet ally cos the inside panel is a very irregular shape. My back has been giving me a bit of trouble this week so I haven't done any more work on them but I plan on getting something pretty much together in the next few weeks as we have a big show coming up on the 22nd/23rd, I just hope its not raining.
