I have a 87 samurai, and I went to get it smogged but it didnt pass because the idle was at 1300. The guy said that everything else was ok but he couldnt pass it because it was idling to high. The idle screw is backed out and none of the kick up soleniods are engaged. Anyone have any ideas.

Loosten throttle cable, lube linkage,
check to see if the return spring is
working/has enough tension, then
use the idle screw to addjust the idle

Sounds like your smog guy wants a little extra $$$ for a passing test. Maybe it is just a stereotype, but I think most of these smog guys lure you in with their $30 test to charge you $200 to adjust the throttle cable. ::)

Oh, welcome to the bbs. 8) BTW, fill out some more info in your profile (at least your location). A Zukiworld member might just be a neighbor. ;)

How's your timing?
I don't know why it happens, but if I gap my plugs at the wide end of the range, the idle is faster than if I gap them at the low end.
Good Luck & Welcome.

Thanks for the replies.
Wildgoody: I checked the throttle and it was loose and the linkage returns ok. The idle screw is backed off the plate.
Shoyrtt: My smog guy is a check station only. They cannot do any repairs, so it can’t be the money. Also the last time I had one smogged that didn’t pass he guided me to the right spot.
Jerrp58: My timing is right on. But I have never messed with the spark plug gap. I have never encountered the deal about the gap effecting the idle, but anything is worth a try.
Shoyrtt I will fill in more info in my profile, I am in Central California. Wanting to get this thing smogged to get it on the Rubicon. The last time I ran the Rubicon was about 22 years ago.
Again I want to say thanks to all of you guys. I will let you know how it goes.

That's crazy. If your not exceding the limits of expeled polutants, what does it matter what RPM you vehicle idles. Oh well, I'm glad I live in rural Middle Tennessee, the land of no inspection ;D
