Title: Sloppy right axle shaft
Post by: BackWoodsTracker on November 14, 2009, 09:45:53 AM
My passenger side axle shaft wobbles around pretty good on the diff side of things. I think it's time for a steel front diff. I have searched on here, and I know the answer is in here, I just can't seem to find it. Here's the question. I want to go with 5.125 gears, what years GV/Tracker am I looking for? I plan on just buying complete front & rear for an easy swap.

If you're looking for the 5.13 gears, they are available in most 5 speeds (the rare exception being the 8-valve 4 door and the carburated Sidekick, and a few others). 4 speed auto's have 5.13's as well.

The steel housing comes out of a V6 5 speed Grand Vitara. I think some of the auto's had them too.

You need the bushing support insert.  Contact the Suzuki Dealer parts.  Its a TSB item.

Well, I located the gears I want. I can get front and rear for $200. Now all I need to do is find a steel diff. It looks like I'll just be replacing that bushing support for now, deer season starts Sat. I went to every junk yard in the area, not one steel diff to be had.

Hey Tim, what is a TSB item? What does TSB stand for? I'll be tearing into it tomorrow and trying to locate the parts then.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin.  In the industry, they sometimes call these "silent recalls", as you only fix the problem is the customer complains or needs the fix.

Does anybody have a parts list for this so I can order online? My local Chevy dealers won't even look up the parts so I can order them. They want me to drop it off and let them do it. All I need is some part numbers. If you sell them, let me know, I'll order right away.

The Suzuki part number for the nylon support ring is 27619-65D00.

I have a pdf of the bulletin but can't seem to find a way to upload it.  I thought maybe there'd be a spot in my profile that I could stick it.

OK, it took an air hammer to ger the right axle shaft off, but it's out. I finally found the time to get to it, just to find out that the manual I downloaded doesn't cover the diffs. So, that adds a few questions for me to ask. Does the driver side axle shaft pull out the same as the right side? If it does, I sure hope it comes easier! And question number 2, does anybody know where to download manual # 99501-65D01-xxx? That's the number my manual says I need. The site I downloaded from is no longer there, sure wish I had known I needed another one then, free downloads are always nice!

EDIT: I got the left axle out. It came much easier than the other side.

I didn't try there, thanks for the link, I'll check out the site more later. That manual is the same one I have. The one I need is a related manual covering the trannies and diffs. Manual # 99501-65D00. It shows the manual in the forward section of the manual you linked to. Now I just need to find it!

The gears I located were junk, so now I just want to do an easy replace. I found a front diff from a 2008 Grand Vitara 2.5 automatic. Will it just bolt into place?  I believe they were steel diffs in the later years right?

Wow I can't believe i just found this post.  Good timing since i was going to buy the support bushing kit from zukination which costs 400$ :) I'm surprised out of all the articles i read about the leaky passenger side of the front diff i never found out about this bushing.  Mine is wallowed out  bad that the snap ring came off and went through the gears a few times but fortunately i was able to fish it out through the drainage hole. I think/hope it can be salvaged.
