Title: broken front lug studs
Post by: jefftx on November 17, 2009, 03:32:20 PM
Hello everyone I'm new here!! I have a question about my newly aquired '87 samurai. Some of the front wheel studs are broken off and/or stripped out. How involved of a job is it to get the bad studs out and replace them with new ones? Do you have to take the hub off or will the studs come out through the back with just the wheel removed?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Jeff ???

You can take them off with a hammer and some time, but it is easier if you just pull the hub and use a vice to do it.  The hub is pretty easy to take apart and it gives you time to inspect your front wheel bearings and seals.

Depending on the condition you might want to pickup either a front knuckle rebuild kit or just a seal kit to keep things clean.  You can get both over at http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/samaxles.htm (http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/samaxles.htm) and from a couple other after-market companies listed on Zukiworld.com's front page.

Typically anywhere you can buy auto parts has them, plus service stations, tire shops, etc. They're easy to change, you can hammer them out, or maybe there's enough room to use a c-clamp & socket to press it out. To put it back in, use a few washers & a nut to draw it through.

There is a good article on rebuilding the knuckles over at izook.  http://www.izook.com/tech/samurai/suspension/steeringknuckle/steeringknuckle.htm (http://www.izook.com/tech/samurai/suspension/steeringknuckle/steeringknuckle.htm)

I thought there was one on Zukiworld but couldn't find it.

Harbor Freight sells a decent ball joint press that works great for pushing out the wheel studs, pick up a Haynes or Chiltons manual it will show you how to remove the hubs, not hard at all.  I just replaced my auto hubs with manual ones.

For pushing out studs I usually put a socket behind it then just stick it in a vice.  Works like a charm.
