I thought my hinges were " tight " too. Here's a good test: open the tail gate, so it's 90 degrees from the back of your rig. Grasp it at whatever place is good for you, preferably near the bottom, and try and lift it. If there's any play AT ALL, the hinge bushings are worn. I just took mine apart and redid them after putting up with the rattling and clacking for over a year,
it finally got too bad. It doesn't take much play in them for the door to make a bunch of noise.
First, I secured the door with some straps to one of my shop rafters to take the weight off it. Then I removed one hinge at a time, disassembled it by removing the round clip holding the pin in, and driving the pin our with a punch. After cleaning the parts up, I could feel the play between the pin and the bushing. I could have went to Napa and bought an oversize bushing, but I found some at my local hardware, and replaced the pins with oversized hardened shouldered bolts. It did require a bit of drilling to get the oversized bushings fit to the hinges, and careful pressing of the bushing into the slightly oversized hole. The hinge material is very soft, and will bend if your ham fisted with it ( ask me how I know.) I ended up using a large socket that fits between the hinge sides to keep it from deforming while pressing in the the new bushing. Sorry no photo's of this, but if you get stuck I could take some tomorrow.
You should be able to find oversized bushings at a good hardware store, and the shouldered bolts, well, that may be a bit harder, but I guess regular bolts would work too. Once I did this NO MORE RATTLES or clacking!

sweet thanks dude im definantly going to try that out!

Mine was rattling at the other side from Bentparts, at the striker/latch. Just under the latch on the tailgate is a round rubber bump with a single bolt... on an eccentric. It fits into a 'C' shaped cup just below the striker. I loosened it a tad, turned the rubber piece a little (to a spot that wasn't worn) & after 3 tries of 'too much/not enough' my rattle was gone!! The gate does take a little more 'tug' to open & 'umph' to close, but I like that much more that RRRAAATTTLLLEEESSSS!!! Hth

I had that a little when I go over big bumps, but my biggest problem is the sensor at the bottom didn't get pushed in enough for some reason and the interior light was on unless I put a piece of cardboard between the door or left the light off.

I thought that rattle was normal?
;)

I played with the round stopper below the hatch and turned the hex stopper above the latch counterclockwise till the rattle stopped.

Yeah, I tried that multiple times, adjusting the rubber and such. Nothing stopped the rattle and clack until I rebuilt the hinges. It was really worth the effort, it's quiet now. I value that.

Yeah, I had that rattle once. Took the back door off and PRESTO! No noise. Worked for the fenders too! ;)

On my Samurai soft top, I replaced the old, hard (LA smog!) rubber bumper, and then moved the lock assembly a _TINY_ bit closer, so now I have to push in on the tailgate, while turning the key, to unlock. Seemed to help on the Samurai.

thats like a built in security device.on my dads volvo 1800es it has a push button to un latch the door. Nobody except me and him can open it becase you have to turn the button 1/8th of and inch then push on it.

You lock your samurai? Weird..... ;)

OK, I said that wrong. I have to push IN on the tailgate, while squeezing the handle to open the door.
Sometimes I have been known to lock it -- can't remember when though. But I'm sure I must have, at least once, somewhere. Maybe when I parked on the street in San Francisco. Or perhaps when the dogs were in back. I'm _pretty_sure_ the key works. Yeah, it did work when I bought it. I think....
