Title: loose steering
Post by: JokerWhiskey on July 26, 2004, 07:33:25 AM
('89 Jimny, OME SPOA, 2" shackles) My steering has tons of play.  If i grab the steering shaft where it goes into the gear box I can rotate the steering wheel about 2" both ways before my wheels move.  Is this because my shaft needs to be extended? Or is it something in the gear box that needs R2?

If it is a manual steering box, there is a jamb nut and an adjuster on top of the box.  As long as all of the other steering componants are in good shape, the box can be adjusted to remove the play.

I believe you turn the adjuster clockwise to tighten the steering.

thanks for the reply. I didn't notice a jamnut, but I'll check it out after work.

Okay JW,

Open you hood and look straight down on top of your steering box.  You will see the rod from the steering column go into the box.  There should be a slotted adjusted with a jamb nut around it.  If you see the adjuster and no jamb nut that may be the reason you have such loose steering.

I had an early 88 Samurai and this is how I adjusted mine.   :D
