Title: modifications advice needed - which reduction is best
Post by: kledi on December 13, 2009, 05:53:23 AM
Hello,

I have a 1993 samurai, 1.3L, with 5'' calmimi suspension. I would like to install either transfer case gears or ring/pinon to compensate for the 31'' tires. Can you please advise which would be best?

Thank you,
Kledi

I've never done t-case gears but I run 512's with 30's and I love them. I'm not a speed demon so getting on the high way is not necessary but I find they work great. I'm going to add some t-case gears as soon as I can but I like to do the pinions first.

You need to think about t-case arm strength when you drop the t-case gears. They will bend.

I would go with the 4.8 kit to run the 31" tires.  You will want to get some 'bulletproof' t-case mounts and strengthen the longer of the two mounts.  Or just switch to an after-market mount such as the Mighty Kong for the Snatch.

Are you doing a lot of highway or is this a trail only rig at this point?

For a 31" tire i would go with T-case gears, best of both worlds.
As other people said, you might want to beef up the mounts and/or go with a T-case bucket of some sort.
