Title: Swapping front differential with rear differentail carrier/housing
Post by: khan_sultan on December 26, 2009, 08:55:03 AM
Friends,

I have the LockRight 1530 in the rear diff and now now, when I tried putting in the 1510 in the front, came to know that it has a 2 pin carrier.

The question I have is: how to convert a 2 pin carrier/housing to 4 pin carrier/housing?

#1: Will just replacing the carrier/housing of old model to new model work?

#2: Can the rear diff (of new model) be put in the front?

#3: Can we take the old model front diff and just put in the new model front diff?

#4: Is the axle spline count same in rear/front?

Here are some pictures that show the two diff's side by side.

Can I just put in the rear carrier sub-part as shown in picture below (picture #1) or do I have to swap th WHOLE carrier with ring/pinion/crown etc etc.. (as in picture 2 below)?

One more question:

What's the inner axle spline count for the front & the rear for the SJ413? 26 or 22?

The SJ-413 normally has 22 spline front axles.  You should be able to use a stock rear carrier with the side gears from the front differential without any problems.

You might want to double check the splines though.   Normally the SJ-413 has a 4 pin carrier in both the front and rear.  The 2 pin carrier was available on the Vitara/Sidekicks.  On those they switched to the higher spline count in 1996.

Did the new shocks for the Spider ever arrive?

Thanks. will get the rear 4 pin carrier and install it upfront with sidegears from the 2 pin carrier. In India, post 93, they changed from 4 pin carrier upfront to 2 pin carrier upfront.

26 splines rear & 22 splines at front...

Yes, the bilstien shocks have arrived and will be put in in the next few weeks.

Look forward to these installs

Let us know how the install goes.  It's fun to find out the differences between the Suzuki SJ and the Gypsy's.

Question, Do you have to run a 3 or 4 pin (as it's been called here) carrier to
use a locker in the front? or will a single pin (holds 2 spider gears) work but
just is not as strong??? just curious

In a 2 pin carrier, the locker will not even fit as the housing is kind of closed (see picture above, right side). So, one has to use the 4 pin type carrier in front if one wishes to use lockers in front diff.

Hmm, interesting.  I know there are people that run a locker in a "2 pin" (one long pin) carrier.  But I am guessing it is the older style of 2 pin carrier that is not as "open" as the one in your pic.  The one in your pic is found in the 96 and up trackick front axle housings.  The older style 2 pin carriers are found in the front housings of 89-95 trackicks and 88.5-95 samurais.

When I was trying to put a locker in my 93 Tracker front diff 2 pin, I would have had to grind about 1/32 off the locker all the way around, to get it to drop in.  I went to a Sami diff, and it dropped right in, but before I got it installed I scored on an ARB.
