I just recently purchased a Samurai and will need to replace the engine here soon. I want to go with a mechanical injected diesel for several reasons There are two kits that I have been able to find, one from RockyRoad(the Axis kit) and the other from Acme. I would like to hear from the wrenchers here about the pro's and cons between these two kit's.
Thnx for your time!

im lookin for the same kinda info....what size diesel you lookin to put in?

I have a VW diesel powered Samurai that is available. Maybe a trade for your Gasser and some moola? If you're planning on doing it yourself, Jeff w/ACME has helped me out with dosing out quality information very freely. Give him a call!

Good Luck, Eric

I've heard alot of good stuff at acme....talk to Jeff. I'll be doing the swap as soon as I blow this one.

I am looking to swap in at least the 1.6TD, or if it is possible a 1.9TD. I havnt found all the answers regarding the 1.9TD IDI setup yet but I will look some more before I start asking a bunch of stupid questions! LOL.

I got Eric's 1.6 NA diesel, and it is a blast. I really like diesels.
The 1.6NA does about 60 flat out sitting on 31's with me, another guy, and 50lbs of gear, though slows when going up hills. This truck was done with a keltec/rocky road kit, and by most accounts the Acme kit is really the way to go for simplicity and is allegedly a better engineered kit.
I'm considering getting a turbo kit for a summer project, just so I can get up to 70mph (highway speed limit around here), so if you could find a turbo 1.6, that's the way I'd go. (I couldn't find a 1.6T for less than $2400 though) The larger 1.8/1.9 TDIs would be super great, but the wiring for them is supposed to be a special version of hell, not to mention they are expensive. I'd guess the 1.9TDI would have crazy torque and probably do about 85mph. The 1.9 with a downgraded pump is certainly an option, but you'd lose alot of power and it would be even more ridiculously expensive, though pretty easy of an install.
Personally, I think 1.6 Turbo is probably the best choice for ease and expense, but if you do a 1.9 be sure to take alot of pics and share :)

Yes factory ECU's and wiring can be a special version of hell, but that is where my aircraft electronics schooling and training come into play.
I currently have a 02' Honda Si for a DD, it came from the factory at about 125whp, she is now sitting at 248whp(naturally aspirated) and gets 36-38mph on the highway, far from stock.
I will have to just break out the "O"scope and DVM, that should be enough to figure it all out, as a diesel ECM has no ignition, no cam advance etc. The imobilizor is even easier to bypass as all it consists of is a key reader(to read the code in the key's chip) this is compared to the stored code in the ECU and if they match a signal is sent to enable the fuel pump relay.

Hey, want to drop by and help reprogram my Tracker for better milage with the turbo? ;) ??? :P 248 Hp at the wheels and better than 36 mpg! That's AWESOME! Man, I'd be freakin tickled to get 25!
-
LOL, but that performance level was not cheap to attain, cams are over 1600$, a grand for engine management, 1700$ for a header, 1200$ for just coilover shocks and so on and so forth. That is one of the reasons why I wanted to go with a Sammy for a playtime toy, the costs are so much lower it makes me almost giddy with anticipation!

I'm working on the 16V ECUs now :)

I you figure out a way to mod a 16V ecu, I'm gonna nominate you for Sainthood.

If you decide to go the 1.9 TDI route, and can defeat the security issues without replacing the injector pump, I would request two things.
A. Please document your work very clearly so I can do it too :)
B. Share the info on how to do it with Acme, since they are super helpful to us Diesel Sammy guys.
If you were able to fix the 1.9 TDI ECU-guage-key security thing you'd be my hero. I'd love to put a 1.9 TDI in a Sammy.

I've been in the hunt for the right Sami to do a TDI swap. I've have/had a couple TDI's and am quite comfortable with them, now I just need to round up the parts!

Not all markets utilize the immobilizer/security system........So comparing USDM to JDM, to EDM/UKDM's schematics will usually show what needs to be modified, it takes someone with above average automotive skills along with hacking skills and a desire to beat the system, LOL
There is always a workaround and many times it is a factory backdoor, like Honda's Immobilizer system, the factory can give you a bypass code that is entered using a combination of throttle and Ebrake pulls, or simply rewire the fuel pump relay(as that is all the immobilizer system usually controls). Afterall the TDI ecu is reflashable, so the security should be able to be over-written, the stealerships has to have that ability in order to swap out malfunctioning components.

Yea I got my 1.9 TDI mounted in the engine bay of my 86 Sammy this past weekend using the acme adapter. Now that the easy part is over, hooking this beast up is guna be a trip! I had the salvage yard send the cluster guage, ignition, & key because I read that these were nessesary to satisfy the imobilizers demands. From reading previous posts in this thread maybe I should of gotten the fuel pump too? I do know Ill be needing one as the BEW TDI's fuel pump was in the actual fuel tank of the Jetta, I'm hoping that an inline pump will suffice! The VW alternator came with the engine but Acme recomended upgrading to a GM alternator, any thoughts on the pros & cons of either?
I'll also need to get a starter, the one off the Sammy engine wont have enough gusto to spin the added compression. Ive seen them recomended from Geo storms, Suz Sidekicks and others.. any opinions there? Also one last ? for talonxracer I've been told that the imobilizer delete offered by TDI chip tuners would be a cure all to the hellish wiring situation. Truthfully I'm not too experianced with major wiring so it should be interesting either way, but the only thing leaning me twords sending in my ecu for the imobilizer delete is while they have it they say they can do a egr (exhaust gas recirculator) delete as well as a stage 1 or stage 2 chip tune to boost performance. I'm not sure which way to go though because with my experiance the more you push an engine the lower the reliability goes.. Any opinions/information would be greatly apreciated!!!

im not an expert in these swaps but i do happen to be an active enthusiast in both suzukis and TDIs seperately.
first thing, double check and make sure the BEWs have a fuel pump. my ALH has no pump at all. the injection pump actually sucks fuel all the way from the tank with no pusher.
next, before you get all worried about wiring, look into getting a mechanical injection pump. i believe there are units available from europe that will drop right into your engine. acme should be able to help you with that.
if you decide to stay with the computer, here are some links of some chip tuners that are able to delete certain circuits like EGR and so forth...
