Hey all, was looking at a 99 2 door Chevy Tracker today as a possible daily driver vehicle. Has 77k on it, in pretty good shape but for the usual 10 years worth of dings and scratches. It's an auto, and looks to have a 2 ltr 4 in it. What seems odd to me is it has a factory strut tower brace that looks pretty beefy. I thought only the Sports came with one. This thing doesn't say " sport" anywhere on it. I'm pretty sure it's a 2.o motor, coil on plug, with a serpintine type belt rather than the two belt system like the older one ( 95) I have now. The engine code sticker under the hood begins with 2oo....... Any ideas about this trucklet? Any definite way to tell if it's a "sport" or what it is? thanks, bent.

UK models have the strut brace
-
That's weird, this is definitely a "colonies" model, left hand drive and all. Maybe someone got ahold of the brace? All the sales guy could tell me is " a little old couple from Philly traded it in on a new Kia." ( Truck is at the Kia dealers used lot.) It is completely stock, and looks real clean underneath. Probably NEVER been off road. Maybe I should get it just because it's different! Now if it was a tintop, that would be the shit!

Hey guys......
My brother- in- law has a "99" and it also has the bar. Some outher ones I have looked at ahve the same bar. I belive it is standard.......All the best to you and yours...... :police:Zo6 gun
-
I had a '03 soft top, 2.0L, 4x4 in the shop just yesterday for a battery. It had the strut bar. So far all the Second Gens I've worked on had the bar, 2 or 4 door, 4 or 6 cylinder, all had it.
-
A few Gen II's were sold with 1.6's. Those are the only ones without it. The 2.0 and 2.5 models have the brace.
-
the 1996 97 and 98 sports, and all 99 and newer ones came with the strut tower brace, (in north America as far as i know) you can actually see the change in camber without it. and if you take it off, you wont be able to put it back on with the wheels on the ground. the bolt holes wont line up hahaha
-
Thanks guys for all the responses. I need to take a nice long test drive in it now.
-
What do they want for it? Around here (Illinois) I'd say it would go for $4000-$5000.
-
They're asking $3999, but I think I can get some off that, it's got a radiator leak that the salesman is aware of that he's willing to bargain on, so providing there's no other real issues It looks pretty good. They're not that popular here, due to everyone being so status conscious I think. Trackers and the like are considered "poor" peoples rides. Who cares, it gets great fuel milage , especially for a 4WD vehicle. There's another at the soon to be closed Saturn Dealer, same year, 99 , but a 4 door. It has some additional options, roof rack, nicer interior, real clean paint and body, 74k on the odo, but they're asking $5500. I've only seen it in the ads so I'm going to go look at it today too. More $, but bigger of course being a 4 door, and would probably be nicer for commuting in. We'll see.
-
Theres a place on sicklerville-crosskeys rd that has a 2dr tracker 2002? 2wd for $1350 needs some work (very little) but they are set on the price.

Keith, where are you in IL? I am in Highland, 30 miles east of St. Louis.

Sorry I didn't mean that only UK models have them. Actually we usually get more basic models so if a UK model has something most other markets will have get it too. With the first gen models we didn't get air con or airbags and we got the 8V engine in the SWB models right through to 2001.
I test drove a 2001 model GV once, the ride was much better than a first gen but I found that the visibility over the bonnet (hood) wasn't so good, the first gen is easier to place. The 2ltr engine pulls well.

Sadly, you get the 2 door Vitara when we don't. If that was available over here I would have traded in my Tracker by now...

That's sweet no doubt! But the next one's gonna be a commuter, NO lift! Maybe just some AT's. Gotta leave it stock so it will at least pull 28 to 30 MPG.
-
Yeah, I hear ya. Don't recall if I mentioned it to you, but I bought a 97 4 dr. No "visible" rust, till ya look under the cladding. Runs too slow when it's cold, but everything works. 150G miles. The catalytic converter seems clogged or fuel filter plugged or something. It drives and she pulled me past all the pokey puppies on the snow covered freeway. 4WD! yeah! I have a 2+2 Calmini lift kit out back on "Project II" that'll fit. Some engine work and some tall skinnies, light duty bumpers.and I'll have something that'll make it all the way to "Joyzee"! I'll post the build on photobucket or something. ;)
-
Cool Dusty! Try chuckin' the cat, it's probably clogged. That'll kill the power for sure. It's only a 12 hr drive here! BTW, who's yello one is that? Very Nice!

I'm a little west of Chicago.

The yellow "banana" as I call it, is this guy Ron's who went to Iraq, left me his car and some $$ to work on it. I have it now and when I'm finished with the GF's engine swap (out of the Aerio) I'll do some more stuff to it. It's all here: disorganized but here none-the-less

;) As usual, really nice work Tone. Dig your little helper!
-
Pulled the engine on the GF's GenII. I was right, top timing chain busted and tore things up, it's an "interference" motor so there's prolly more damage:
there's supposed to be a roller chain there! That's something I'd consider, Mike. The GenII's are a little lighter duty it seems. I have both and I like the Gen I's better. I like the power but if I didn't find that cheap Aerio engine, I'd be looking at $900 for parts & labor. If the valves are bent and/or pissed-ons holy, well. I like my 8V!

I know that on paper the Gen II's have considerably more power but does the added 400 pounds on the vehicle take that away? I know when last drove a Gen II I didn't feel it was quicker than my Gen I.
-
Hmmm, the Gen 2 engine looks like it requires more maintenance or at least checking over. Does the Gen 2 motor use a hydro tensioner for the cam chain? ( oil pressure controlled?) A more positive method sounds like it would be a good upgrade. Lots of motorbike engines use hydraulic cam and balancer chain tensioners, and almost all of them benefit from replacement to a manual adjuster. Kawasaki and Suzuki single cylinders come to mind. These motors ( gen 2 Suzuki ) could probably use one too. Moot point for me anyway, going to have to put off any new purchase for awhile.
-
Hmmm, check out the pic. Can you see that busted bracket thingy setting between the gears? Maybe that's what you mean, eh? I'could let you know more whenever I can get my GM manual to boot up properly.
-
I'm not sure, it's so beat up! Most cam chain tensioners use some kind of plastic guide thing, that pushes against the chain to maintain constant tension. Some (most) are controlled by oil pressure, which is channeled to the tensioner via some kind of spring loaded valve. It would probably be behind the front cover? Any flucuation in oil pressure to the tensioner, low oil, dirty or clogged tensioner passenges, etc. will cause it to stay loose, letting the cam chain flop around, and consequently do what yours did. That's why most change over to a manually adjustable tensioner, on bike motors anyway. Set it, forget it. Don't know if it's possible to do it for these motors, but I'd look into it if I had one!
-
the main reason for failure on these engines ( 1.8 2.0 2.5 v6 and 2.7 v6) , is people not running 5w30 in the engine, causes the tensioners to fail, not a big deal at first, just causes a bit of valve train noise, but if left too long, that is what can happen.

-
OK, I'll bite. Why is the oil weight so critical in these? 5/30 10/40, oil is oil. It's the pressure that controls the tensioner.
-
In simple terms, the thinner oil (5w30) has an easier time entering into the small internal parts of the tentioner to make it operate, more of an issue during first start up from what I understand. anything over 5w starves the parts of oil for a few seconds every start up, leading to premature failure over time. (I could be wrong, just my understanding)
there was a thread about this on pirate not long ago, perhaps bobzuki will chime in, and shed a bit more light to the matter.
-
I think you're right, Mike! At 5:00 on the gear on the left (int.) there is this small cylinder that looks something like a hydraulic lifter. Spring is under it just as you explained. I'll have to wait till I pull the Aerio's valve cover to see what a good one looks like. I'll post up if you're interested. I guess we're getting a little off your subject tho, man. Soo Solly. But we're lernin' eh? Thanx for the oil info, first thing I checked when we pulled the car in and it was bone dry! No signs of a catastrophic loss, just a bunch of miles between checkin'. The car conked out 500 miles away, on some north bound road in the mountains of West Virginny, I came out of the woods from huntin' turned on the phone, got the news and freaked! By the time I got ahold of her she was driving her U-haul truck , pulling her U-haul trailer with the Tracker on it, telling me it was no big deal! At's my girl! ;)
-
The thing I don't like about the 1.8, 2.0, 2.5 engines is that the MPGs seem to be quite a bit lower than the 1.6s.
One of my 4 doors (1.6, 5 speed, 4wd) gets 27-29 MPG.
Another one of my 4 doors (1.6, 5 speed, 4wd) gets 28-32 MPG.
What do you guys get that have the 1.8, 2.0 or 2.5 engines?
-
Before I lifted my 97 with the 1.8L I got 24 MAX. After the lift and 31's I got 15-17
-
try a 2.7 with 33's and an auto LOL
Between 12 MPG to 15MPG. BAHAHAH ;D
but its a small price to pay for 180 hp ;)........well in a zuk anyway haha
-
My Grand Vitara with a 2.5/auto trans/4 door bone stock gets about 17-18, the best I have done on the highway is 22.5. My girlfriends 2.0 2door/5-speed doesn't really get any better mileage.
-
WOW! Now the turbo 16v is really sounding good, 20/22 if I drive it easy.

Yep, that sounds like a hydraulic tensioner. In this case, I think the complete LACK of oil did the job!

OK, OK I now see we are looking for the lowest numbers. My 98 Expedition with a 5.4L Tritan gets 12.2 HA!!!! Wait a minute, that sucks. Now I'm bummed out.
