Title: im stumped need halp!!
Post by: 89tracker43000 on January 14, 2010, 06:25:42 AM
hay whats up guys? ive had this on going problem with my tracker for the las few weeks and its driving me nuts i dont know what is going on with it. it keeps loosing coolat its pushes it out some times and some times it will be low but the over flow will be empty but the radiator will be low. and when i first start it up when its cold it will blow water or coolant out of the exhaust and runns a little rough at first. but i have no other problems like water in oil or oil in coolant but i do smell gas in the coolant and im not sure if its the intake gasket or the head gasket. i did a compresson test and all the cylenders was at 150 psi to 160 psi any help would be great. i did buy a head gasket kit and i do not see any leaks any where and i did the water pump and t belt like 2 months ago but it was doig this before ad i put 3 different stats in it not sure where to go fom here.
                                          thanks joe

First, what year and engine type ( 8v/16v) are you working on? You may want to check the coolant hoses connected to the intake manifold, and look for coolant leaks or cracks in the intake side of things. Smelling " gas " in the coolant could mean several things, but I've also heard that that coolant passages in the block are pretty thin, and can erode over time. Maybe a cracked block ?

Sounds like a classic head gasket leaking. Has the engine been over heated
lately or ever that you know of?

Gas smell in the radiator is a tell tale sign of a bad head gasket, I wouldn't
think it's an intake gasket because there is always vacuum in there, it would
be sucking water into the engine, not pushing gas into the cooling system.

The compression sounds good, the difference between cylinders should be closer,
is the lowest pressure on just one cylinder? or two? If two are they next
to each other?

You could have a cracked block too, but I don't think that's the case.

I would imagine when its all said and done you are going to be looking at a bad head gasket.  They arent that difficult to replace on these engines to be honest I would be inclined to do it yourself and save some cash if you can.
