Title: Replacing stock driving lights
Post by: maddoghd on January 15, 2010, 06:21:35 AM
Does anyone have a suggestion to replace the stock driving lights to something better.  Remember I do drive this on the street so I want to be legal.

Do you mean headlights?  Did Samurai or Sidekicks even come with driving lights.

If it is headlights, you need to change your headlight wiring to use relays to get the maximum effect. The original headlight wiring uses a switched-ground and is not heavy enough, even for the stock headlights.

Here is a good link that I wished I had found before doing mine.

You can use 12 gauge wire instead of the 10 gauge mentioned in the link if you plan on using the DOT legal lights.

I use the Sylvania  Xtravision halogen headlights and quite pleased with them. They are about $24 for a pair.

Note: 10 gauge is bigger than 12 gauge

For head lights, I got a pair of SilverStar bulbs, I think
they are made by Sylvania also, and I love them.

thanks for that link haptown. it helped for the most part, but it still is a little confusing. it is probably confusing because it was hard to read with the white on black lettering. I am glad ZW has a white background with normal black lettering. could someone try and clear it up a little for me.

When it comes to Samurai links, I am a pack rat. When I find a better one, I should delete the old ones but that is not always the case.

A much better link for Samurai headlight relay diagram.

Instead of the male 9003 plug, you can use male quick connectors to plug in the existing female 9003 connector. I then wrapped it in self-sealing electrical tape.

edit re: links - when I find a web page with useful info like this one that I know I will need later, besides bookmarking it, I also "print" the web page using a program named PDFCreator http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/). It sets up a virtual printer that outputs a PDF file of the page you want to archive to your Samurai folder where you save your favorite images, FSM, etc.

Should work the same since you are only changing the wiring at the point that the power connector attaches to the headlight.  If you have daytime running lights and they burn at less than 100% power, then they would run at full power with the relays.

i don't have a wiring diagram for Trackicks but you might look here http://www.acksfaq.com/sitemap.htm (http://www.acksfaq.com/sitemap.htm)

This link contains a wiring diagram that shows a DRL. The DRL should probably be disconnected if using the relay fix. http://www.suzuki-forums.com/suzuki-sidekick-escudo-vitara-geo-tracker/35055-headlight-relay-94-sidekick.html (http://www.suzuki-forums.com/suzuki-sidekick-escudo-vitara-geo-tracker/35055-headlight-relay-94-sidekick.html)
