So, I finally got around to building a box for the sub that I scrounged off my brother... the big bad Wal-Mart 15". :)
Some pics:

Size comparison with a spray bottle of Armor-all:

This might belong in the water cooler... I dunno. :-/
-
dude i have that same sub, but mine is in a Wally World box. ;D
stu
-
I got it for free because my little brother wasn't using it ;D
Box only cost me $10 to build, so I'm happy with it :)
-
Nice job on the box , did you use 3/4 mdf? I just built my ported box but I took it out cause it didn't fit in the kick very well. I'll snap some photos later.
-
I think it looks great, now just needs some carpeting and your all set. I want to get a pair of decent subs...but I'm afraid my alternator will not be able to handel it.
-
alternator will not be able to handel it.
I was running a JBL 1200.1 and 2 kicker comp vr 12's in my tracker. It did fairly well you'd be suprised at what you can throw at that alternator. Right now I am running a PPI PCX 2125 amp and a Elemental Designs B2 12. It dims the lights pretty bad, but in the day its fine.
-
i am running a RF 800|removethispart|@2 that runs 1045 watts rms and 2258 watts max through 2 kicker CVR 15s it doesnt give the amp enough power but the alt deffinantly takes the thrashing w.o complaint

Yep, 3/4" MDF. :) It was going to be for a pair of 8"s that I have, which probably would've been overkill, but I nabbed this sub, and it worked out pretty good :)

I was actually thinking of going the bedliner route just for durability, and it'd match the rest of my Tracker pretty well. ;D
-
if u used 3/4 with some liquid nails and 2" dry wall screws i really would worry about durability =) mines still kickin
-
Not bad man, not bad! $10!! Thats great. Yeah, two eights might have been too much. Even those subs from Wal-Mart can pound alright, so I'd be happy. The best sounding stuff to me is cheap because you know that you didn't throw away a truck load of cash to get good sound. No offence to the guys that do that, but come on people, the music should sound great inside the car first... then outside... I hate those small little cars that cruise around here with the two 12's and the trunk is bzzzbddbmmin'. Hell, thats so much bass that really these people just pound tunes to show off their overly priced subs. I love the way my Kick sounds. Balance... thats my motto. So that leads me to my question about your mid range stuff. What u packin? By the way, what was the first song you tested it with?
Hey, has anyone tried brass pegging their rig? I have some done and man... what a weird change in vibration! Clairty will be mine! I'm looking for at least a 65% reduction in cab 'noise'.
-
i run 2 sets of audiobahn comps so thats 4 6.5s 4 4" and 4 tweets..i also run a 900$ clarion deck i run 2 eq's along with the decks already impresive built in eq...i have far more clarity then even a movie theater with 5.1 DTS
for alot of people the noise outside is only a sideaffect of the quality inside..when u step into my car u hear no rattles...all u hear clear sound and massive massive bass..u can hear rattles on the ourside of the car simply because i dont give a shit what other people think when i drive by..i did not do it for them..but the loud bass does help when i get people like u that give me dirty looks for enjoying my music..
-
Oh please Mike, don't tell us you need all that bass for sound quality. ::) All I know is the audiologists are going to be very busy in a few years. ;D
-
Good move with the clarion deck but not so hot on the audiobahn.....

Well that's what I'm worried about, my current system which is a 45Wx4 with two 4"s and two 6x9"s already dims at high volumes at night and actually the cd player begins to cut out.
I'm really going to invest in a better alternator within the next year or so.
-
I'm running a sony deck with 4 JBL 4" speakers and a Koss bass tube. Very inexpensive and I can still hear it clearly (and feel it) on the highway with the top off ;) Plus the added bonus that the stock speaker grilles are on so not too many would be thieves will give it a second glance...no that there's much invested should they want to take it ;)
-
I am going to school for mobile electronics in the fall should be a good time. I am heavy into car audio and such. SO its all in a days fun for me.

Right now, the sub is the only thing hooked up, but I have intentions to buy some 6x9's (2) before the end of summer for some midrange.
First song I tested it with: Some random THX bass test that I downloaded off KaZaa. :)

Whaddya think about my plans:
Kenwood DDX7015
Boston Acoustics Z6 Components up front
Boston Acoustics 6.53 Components in the back
2 Rockford Fosgate T15002 Amps for the speakers
2 Kicker 10" Solo-X subs in vented boxes
2 Earthquake PHD3 Amps for the subs.
I figure when I'm done I may as well join IASCA and compete in the SQ division. If I went SPL then I'd be looking at 2 18" Solo-X subs and 4 Earthquake PHD3 Amps.
-
i love kicker and all..but i would not go 2 solo-x's if u are going for SQ..there are far FAR better subs out there for SQ..RE for one u could look into XXX subs there are just alot of better SQ subs around right now
i hate to say that because i love kicker and it has been good to me..but the SQ in a solox compared to other subs its like mud vrs wine
-

no i dont need all the bass for SQ...but the bass is there dont really know why but it sounds good to me..i listin to movies the same way i just like to feel it and ill bet i still have better hearing then most considering i dont run the subs day in and day out

I may end up getting them anyway for street use and also pick up 2 Boston 10s. I love Boston Acoustics. I have 2 Volfenhag 12s and they hit pretty damn hard and are 1ohm stable, but the bandpass box they are in isn't the right size. But I still want Bostons.
-
bostons are a super super picky sub..so make sure the box is a perfect match to the reccomended specs..u really have no room for error with them
dont get me wrong the solox does have SQ..and if ur car is the only one u listin to then u will probably never know what ur missing..like my kickers they sound great till i fire up the 3 12w7s or the 3 15" XXXs
but for me i take a hard look at what kinda cash i am going to spend and try and fit the peices to that...like the kickers were my first sub i was on a really tight budget so i bought one at a time lol..but damn dude for 300 bucks inluding the 6cf box i built that thing is blisteringly loud
just pick what u think has a good ballance of look nice/SQ/SPL/ and bang for the buck..u can never go wrong
-
The solox is not by any means an SQ sub, its built for one thing and one thing only SPL. The Solox is a truely awesome sub. But If i were going for SQ and SPL I would look towards a brahama or xxx.
-
Yeah, money is always the concern with me. It's like my computer speakers. I picked up some parts from a garage sale and went to Costco and bought a sub and some sats for 50 bucks. 3 hours later with a little elbow grease and a lot of brass points and pieces, I had a setup that pounded harder and sounded better (human ear cap) than my $4000 entertainment setup on my t.v.
Any audiophile can achieve great SQ with a little imagination. Seriously, things like brass pegging (more common in HT) keep the energy where it should stay!

Hey man, I wasn't attacking 'you' for buying overpriced gear to enjoy your techno funk or rockabilly music. I'm just saying that I like setups that wash over you, not cause you to have a bowel movement. All you hear is clear sound and massive massive bass?? Give me a break man, the human ear/brain can only take so much. Try turning up your volume to max and try that out... then plug your ears and get a taste of what your ears are missing out on. If you can't admit that you've bought into the bigger is better concept to show up your friends or impress chicks, you have a long way to go in understanding what sound quality really is. By the way, did you pay for all that stuff yourself, or did someone (like your opinion) provide it for you?

I love my current System, I was heavy into it before with 4 kicker cvr 12's in my bronco and 2 jbl 1200.1 amps. Now for me its all about SQ, I love my ED B2 12. I found that a huge system makes a mess of your whole car. My tailgate window in my bronco stopped working things just rattled apart until it was just a big ol' rattle trap. RIght now Its hard to build an SQ system with all the road and wind noise of the soft top on my tracker. I'm trying to get the imaging right with my speakers to try to cancel some of it out. Hopefully I can get it someday...

What sounds good to one person can be completely different than the next. When I would have a customer come in ready to pick out a system and put it in their ride, I would:
1- find out what price range they were looking at.
2- see what brand head unit they wanted (most only want one kind and wont vary on the head units for one reason or an other)
3- put their favoriate cd in
4- set the volume to their favoriate level
5- switch through various amp/speaker combos untill they had what they wanted.
Occasionally I could get them to go with a different head unit if I could show them it produced better sound but most would stay with their original choice. But when the speakers/amps were fine tuned to what they wanted to hear, the customer was usually suprised that it was usually no where near what they came in there to buy.
The last time I bought componets, i ended up "down grading" from MB Quarts to Kenwood Excelon series speakers. At near half the price but sounded better to me than the high end Quart componets.

Yeah, I'm hung up on Kenwood and want the DDX7015 but the damn thing only has 2 volt pre-outs. That's about the only down side to the deck.
I know Bostons are picky, most subs are. The 2 12" Volfenhags hate both prefab boxes I have (1 sealed, 1 bandpass). I had dual Boston 10's in a Boston bandpass box in my 83 s-10 and those things were amazing. I had Boston 4x6s in the dash, 2 way 6x9s in boxes behind the seat, 3 way 6x9s inside the bench seat (inbetween driver passenger) and the 2 10's in the bed. Pioneer deck, alpine 11band eq and a Jensen 500w amp. (shutup, it worked.. haha)
That system tweaked just right was super clean and could be heard from quite a distance. It could be obnoxious and extremely subtle. I loved it. Made me a Boston fan for life.

yah i have paid for all of my equipment..all of it i have had a job since i was 15 so u can just stfu there
and ur telling me i dont know what sq is?? i have built stereos that would make u shit and wtf is this pick up chicks shit i drive a GEO TRACKER!!!!!!!!!! besides anyone that thinks loud stereos make them cool are just plain retards loud music just makes u an outcast among most
and ur not trying to start a flame war? well look here u pussy lets not dance around u dont like me and i dont like u. u are a moron amoungst closedminded morons i know just what the human ear can handel i also know the shatering point of windshields and mirrors..why because i have real life expirence with things u only drool over stereos are my thing i know them in out up and down i have made quite alot of money doing it also i STILL make quite alot of money doing so i have done installs in everything from blazers to CLKs
now listin dick if u have to shrowd what u want to say in that veil of oh im not starting anything then go wack off in the corner little man..dont ever say shit about me again i am nothing but nice to ANYONE on here or anywhere else i do not deserve some unknowing assclowns disrespect

i know the deck has other nifty features and all..but if u are going to run amps off the deck u really want 4v pre outs or more..the sound is just 10 fold better past 4v
take a look at the panasonic 903 or the 983 if u want MP3 ability..the 903s are really a very very nice deck and can be had for something $170 now since they came out with a slightly newer model

It sucks that Kenwood had to dick that deck with the 2volts. The rest of the decks are 4 or 5v. The DVD is nice, especially since I'm gonna pick up a dvd burner soon. But I also need a deck that plays mp3s AND wma's. I'm using media player to rip my CD's now and I don't wanna take the time to convert them to MP3s. I prefer the WMA anyway.
I've never been a fan of Panasonic equipment, not sure why. I've always had Pioneer or Alpine in my first 3 cars. I switched to Kenwood in my third and have liked their equipment since. It's also nice that they use the same harness for their decks.
but we'll see. I'm still a ways off from building the sound system. Byt the time I get to it something better will be out.

Your response is understandable. that would make u shit
?? That’s what I was trying to say, no bowel movements please :o (in case you didn't know, that’s the process of taking a shit). Anyway, besides anyone that thinks loud stereos make them cool are just plain retards loud music just makes u an outcast among most
that is something I truly can agree on. I added the comment about the flame war because frankly, I love Zukiworld, and I'd hate to be banned just for expressing my opinion. You sure take a 'poke' pretty hard. Listen you don't have to be all macho here. I have enjoyed many of your posts and I think you are very knowledgeable, and there is no reason that I should not like you. If you don't like me that’s fine, but my world is too small to fit that bullshit. As for the drooling part, yes, there are things that I want to waste my money on... but I haven't because I've practically achieved audio utopia in my car for under $100, and that’s fine with me. By the way, the ‘wack’ off comment and the swearing is really adolescent, but hey, you are a young and it's predictable... Anyway, this assclown has better things to do than to listen to a know it all juvenile, so enjoy your colostomy sq and have a nice day.
steveo
By the way, it would make it a whole lot easier to read your posts if you actually used punctuation. Oh yeah, the proper spelling of ‘shrowd’ is shroud.
-
I will be happy when I get a stereo installed in the tintop. I can't see how you guys get so worked up. This board is about Zuk's, crawling, mudding, breaking, and fixing not about bitching and biting.
-
I think only one person was getting worked up but thats just my .02

u know i am not really positive..but i belive some 2v pre outs are better then others...i cant remember what the spec is to look for off the top of my head..ill check for you though

haha yes i know it would make it easier to read..but for some reason i dont type like that who knows
i am not trying to be all macho i am just tired of people always talking crap about people that have stereos or modify cars..i get alot of that crap around here from people who have no idea what they are talking about.
im sorry if i got heated but i am just sick of all the closed minded people in this world
