Pulled the 5 speed outa the GF's '02 Tracker to fix some stuck fill/drain plugs and I noticed that it had been leaking. It looked like it was coming out of this small hole under the indent spring bolts. It had a little silicone in it (which got cleaned out - oops!). I think that the sensor nearby was the leaker, but now I'm wondering if I should put some more silicone in the hole. Whadya think?

I would do one better, silicone is a ghetto fix, considering you have the trans out. carefully thread the hole, and put a drain plug in it. if you do that, it wont ever be a concern.

I vaguely recall a post on some forum mentioning that mystery hole. This was on a gen1 trackick, but IIRC the consensus was it's supposed to have a plastic 'inverted top hat' plug in it... like what you find in the holes of a reman'd pump etc. Something like that with some rtv around the edge would prolly be fine. As long as it's not where the breather is supposed to connect? Hth

Thanx for the replies. I looked at 3 different trannies and they all look like this one. I think I'm gonna press a small tube into it and link it up with the other breather tubes. I'd hate for water to get in there! ;)

There is a rubber plug that is supposed to be in there. If you haven't got a plug, then just put something in there and seal it up with silicone sealer. I wouldn't run it to any other vent/breather tubes.

I've noticed that on all the trannies that I've looked at, the alleged plug is absent. My question is, did it get blown out? There is always a clean area around the hole. Is this from some expulsion of moist air? This section of the trans case does not have a vent, which, by the evidence presented, may be neccessary. Hence my decision to add a "vent". Objections? :-\
