Title: Drivers side front axle problem.
Post by: hotdog on February 23, 2010, 03:21:11 PM

This is a 99- 4 door Chevy tracker.It is all stock .

Have any of you had problems with the snap ring popping out of the groove that holds the axle behind the hub?

I had new axles put in last year and haven't had any problems with them till this winter.I can drive it in 4 w.d. on the road, and don't have any problems, but as soon as I get in the mountains and it gets in a hard pull my drivers side axle will pull through the wheel bearing enough to pop the snap ring out of its groove.I'm afraid I'm going to get mud and water in the bearing where it is letting the seal pull away from the spindle.I can't find any reason for it doing this. The axle seems fine and I've checked all my brackets on my front diff. and they seem fine.I was hoping one of you have run into this problem, and could help me out.

My tracker still has the stock front diff. I talked to a mechanic today and he said that it may just need a new snap ring.So I got the dealer to order me one.I hope that is all that is wrong, because I'm getting tired of pulling the hub off and putting the snap ring back in its groove.

What brand replacement CV axles did you buy, may I ask?  Were they AC Delco (factory) axles or from some other vendor?

I bought them from Advance Auto Parts.I've had them in for over a year with no problems.I went to a dealer today and had them order me a new snap ring,I just hope this helps. :-\

I think I got my problem fixed.I ordered two new snap rings from the dealer and put them on,and so fare they haven't popped out of the groove when it's in 4wd.I went up a muddy hill and would make the wheels spin and couldn't make them pop out,so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
