it sounds like you have a faulty sending unit.
-
the gauge sending unit in the tank is ok i have another sending unit and i hooked it up to c if that was the problem and the gauge read the same.
-
did u dent the tank? i did on my 91 now it's out a bit by like a 1/4 tank
-
no dents in the tank.
-
does it sit level? the car I mean. front to back/side to side, uneven height can cause weird readings.
-
My gauge stopped going all the way up also, and I have an 89'
so there might be an issue with the older gauges just not reading
accurate like they used to.
Carry a Gallon or so of gasoline until you either figure it out or run
out of gas, that will tell you something about what's going on.
I used to get about 200-230 miles per tank highway, till I lifted
and built up my trucklet, if you are stock that would be a start
to figure out how far you can go.

ok sounds good i have a guage cluster out of a 94 so i will try it and see if it works. i get abot 200 in city now but thats pushing it i deliver pizza. but on highway i can get close to 300 miles. and im all stock the only thing i did was change the tranny from 3 speed auto to a 5 speed stick.
-
Did you change the gears out when you swapped transmissions? That might explain your great highway mileage but lower then average city milage.
-
no i did not change the gears out i just got a 5 speed and i used my t case and put it back in
