Title: Making bikini top out of old top for Trackick?
Post by: keith on July 15, 2004, 03:14:49 PM
Has anyone made a bikini top out of an old top?  How do you attach it in the back?  Has anyone made one that could flip back like the softtop?

My wife and I made one out of the old top for the Sammi.
Just used 3 peices of 1.5" nylon straps to go around the roll bar, one in the middle and one on each side pulled tight and snap back on themselves. Might work for a Trackick?

Make a full length safari top out of your old sammy top, just cut out the side and rear windows. Cut the rear window at the seam from the top of the clear part of the window, be careful not to cut the top itself. The side windows just behind the first snap on the side  straight up to about 1/4" below the top side seam. Straight back to the back of the window, cut it from the bottom just forward of the rear snap on the side. Doing this will allow use of the two rear snaps on each side for top support and use the front snap on the side for support of the center.
Been there, done that, works great.

I did the same thing that Idaho stated. I just bought a Bikini top (and yes they still fold back like the regular soft top ;)) for 1-2 people riding, and made a safari top out of an old soft top (removed rear window, cut out side windows) for riding with rear passengers when it was hot.

I made this last year. I got the idea from a post from last year that I can't find now :(.

I had the same idea as you so I took a look at my old top last night.  After figuring my time and trouble, I've about decided I'd be better off just buying one as my old top would need stiching repaired on the front corners.  But my plan was to cut the top behind the roll bar, then sew on a nylon strap at each of the rear corners.  These are tied to the handles inside the cab, next to the seats.  That appears to be how the factory one is done.  Should be fairly simple.  Let us know how it turns out if you try it!
Here's a link to Bikini top installation instructions to see how the factory top would work.

Ya, just cut the windows out, keep
the snaps on the back and wear it
like a full top without the windows

You have a 90 with a one-piece top, right?(the side windows don't zip out like newer models). I made a bikini top out of the front of an old top I got at the junkyard. I cut it at the back edge of the Targa, folded it over and sewed a seam across it, then I sewed a dollar store ratchet strap to each rear corner. I hook the end of the straps into the plastic bases that hold the rear hoop's support bars and tighten it up until taut. It works well, but I can't open it sunroof style, it slides off. I can't see why you'd want to run a bikini and then open it anyways; just take it off!

Anyways, I found something that works better, is free and still allows sunroof action. Zip out the back window(I roll mine down, rolled to the outside, and stick it between the spare tire and the top of the tailgate). Then I un-velcro and un hook the sides/rear corners and roll them up to the inside until they get to the seam above the windows. The front edge of the roll is held in place by being sandwiched between the top and the targa. The rear edge of the roll sticks out the back, I take this and wrap it around the inside of the rear hoop and hold it in place with a mountain bike's toe clip strap. Instant safari top, free and quick. I'll get a couple pics in the daylight for you...

I actually run the bikini top most of the time instead of the top off completely, keeps the sun off but still allows airflow...plus at night when the gf gets cold you can roll the windows up and it actually is really nice.

Here is what I have been running for the last few months.  When it rains I put a tarp on the floor of the rear and occasionally empty the water out.  We haven't gotten much rain in the last 2 months though.
