Title: 1988 samurai wont start burned ground wire... help?
Post by: josephcox119 on March 07, 2010, 04:15:00 PM
So I bought a samurai and it started fine like 4 times brought it home went to turn it ove and it turned over for a sec, I pumped the gas and then it wanted to fire but burnt a ground wire that leads off the bottom of the distributer... I replaced the wire with some heavy duty wire but it still wont work... it tried to turn over again and acted like the battery was dead but its brand new.... Any advice

find the REASON that wire burned.  theres always a reason.   those things absolutely DO NOT just fail for no reason.    from the sounds of it though, you've got one of those heavily backyard engineered vehicles I'd imagine.

if it's clicking then it's a samurai starter thing.. Check the wire going into the starter....the little one. Make sure your batt cables are tight and clean. Being able to pull them off by hand is too loose.

There is a clicky starter fix sold on a few sites.

it turns over like the battery is dead but its charged the posts are clean and the terminals are tight. I have replaced that wire and if i mess with it, it will turn over faster and I've tried to ground it at three different spots, I know its a good ground... But I have no idea why the wire would just burn off the bottom of the distributer

you've likely got a weak connection somewhere that you're missing.  get it cleaned up and it'll start up just fine.

Check the main earth lead from the starter, if thats bad the engine will try to earth out elsewhere. Its not unknown for dizzy earths and even clutch cables to burn out because of this.
