Title: 3 Speed Tranny Replacement issues
Post by: TrickTrax on March 13, 2010, 04:37:31 PM
Okay call, me cheap. I purchased a 3 speed auto out of a 95 tracker to go into my 90 due to slipping between 2nd & 3rd. I grew to have an extreme dislike for automatics when doing the swap, what a pain in the A^&! Anyway I got the new/used tranny in. Now it won't shift out of first. I have checked the modulator, and vacuum lines, all electrical, vacuum and other connections are fine. I am thinking it may be a stuck valve as I am not sure how long the new/used tranny had been sitting.

In looking at the vacuum connection at the intake manifold there is only a pin small pin hole. Are the vacuum requirements for a 95 different from a 90? I checked the modulator on the new tranny, seems to be fine. I don't show any vacuum at the modulator though. When I put my finger over the connection on the intake manifold I can feel a little vacuum. The modulator from my 90 appears to be a little different form the 95. My goal was to rebuild my old tranny, then pull the motor rebuild it and put them back in together. I was hoping to be able to drive it while I worked on the old tranny, but now looks like I am hosed. Is there anyway to unstick a valve in the tranny short of pulling it apart? Could it be an issue with the torque converter? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The problems you have are both the same, stuck/sticky valve body,
both the trannys sound like they have the same problem, drop the
pan and clean the valve body, should do wonders.

Also, is the new trans a 3 speed? not a 4 speed OD model ?
All the 3 speeds are made by GM and have a GM tag on the
left side of the housing, the 4 speeds are made by
Toyota/Aisin-Warner and require a computer to work
