Does it do it if you stop in neutral? could be the torque convertor
lockup not unlocking as you slow down and stop

filters are new, no improvement. does not feel like converter, it does not try to keep moving. i tried it in N and still did it. thanks for ideas guys. i have heard about kicks issue with throttle position sensor, what are symptoms of that issue?

Might be a long shot since it's a completely different vehicle, but I had the same problem in my Chevy fullsize w/ auto trans.  It was a dirty throttle body.  When I slowed down to stop, it would sputter and die.
Check TB and buy some TB cleaner at auto parts store (NOT carb-cleaner, they're different chemicals!)

Good call on cleaning the TB.  those can cause issues.

When that happens in a trackick with the 1.6 16V then it can be a sign of the EGR system being clogged or restricted with buildup, or because the IAC valve is malfunctioning or needing adjustment.  But with the 1.8 16V, like your sport has, I'm not sure if it indicates a problem in the same areas or not.
