Post by: blaster716 on March 23, 2010, 05:03:00 PM
I keep seeing adds for performance chips for samurais , claiming up to 50 hp and 3-6 mpg . do theese work or are they a scam

considering the samurai's displacement and low power output,  I'm inclined to say scam.    you're not gonna get 50hp extra out of a sammy motor unless you've got a few internal mods I dont think.   I mean they're putting down what? 65-75 hp at the wheels? max.

Scam, all they are is a resistor over one of the sensors.

It just tricks the engine to make it think that its running cold all the time

Why stop at 50? There are ads on ebay for chips that will give you 500 hp AND 100 MPG!  I got two, going for a 1000 HP! ONLY $20!

It a scam but from what I've seen I believe that it is possible to remap a Samurai ECU. I wouldn't expect big gains though, maybe a few bhp at the top end and better drivability through the rev range. Remapping only makes a big difference when combined with other mods unless you're running an ECU controlled turbo (so not the Sammy!).
