what is the proper oil weight oil for a 96 sidekick sport with 1.8L?

Only use 5w30, cam tensioners will thank you.

The proper oil depends on the climate & temperatures you're operating in the vehicle in.
Based on the owner's manual, 10w30 is the preferred oil, 5w30 is acceptable in temperatures ranging from -30*c to 30*c, 10w30 for temps from -20*c to 30*c and for temperatures exceeding 30*c, 10w40 or 10w50 - take your pick.
I'm in the tropics - we're >30 most days (it's 31.3 in the shade today), I run a 10w40.

The 1.8 and 2.0 are much happier with 5w30 because of tight clearances in the cam chain tensioners. I just had to replace all the chains, sprockets and tensioners on my 2.0 because the PO used the wrong oil and the tensioners can't pump up properly when the engine is cold. Not a cheap or fun job.
