Title: Half an oil change?

My neighbor has seen my rigs and has caught the bug. Now he wants a Tracker too! He's got a line on an '90 with a siezed engine for $275. It seems the previous owner only did half an oil change. In other words, he drained the oil, replaced the filter, then drove off! My question is; what are the chances that IF we can free up the engine, that it'll run OK? I've done it before on chevy's but not Suzi's.

A loss of oil pressure seems to take out the rod bearings starting at the front
and working to the back, at minimum you will need to replace the bearings,
at the maximum you will need a crank and rods plus all the bearings, the pistons
and rings could be OK but an entire teardown and rebuild should be done for
inspection to have a reliable engine

absolutely ZERO chance that it'll run ok if you can unseize it.  no oil means bearings are gonna be FUBAR,  you could be looking at needing a new crank, and cam(s)    but all bearings are a 100% guarantee, along with new head gasket.

I had an engine loose all of it's oil, had to replace it.  We swapped out the main bearings as a quick fix and it ran fine as long as I kept it under 4k.  Never did die on me, but it would have required a full rebuild to get back into functional condition.  Instead I just bought a JDM engine.

Add a head to the list of possibles - if I recall correctly the cam runs directly in the head, with no bearings.

more than likely, it'd just be cheaper to buy a running motor from a wrecked donor vehicle really. and less overall work/time.

good call on the head, I forgot that.

Well we discussed the possibilities, and cause he's a newb we thought that he might be better off getting a runner in halfway decent shape to gradually modify. Part of his indoctrination is using the zuke forums as a super info source. I explained to him what we do here then sent him a link to this thread. You fine soldiers responded to the call of duty and told us exactly what we NEEDED to hear. Thankyou. He'll prolly lurk here for awhile then jump right in and join the fun! Again, thanx guys. ;)

for that price though, I'd snag it up for myself and build a fun offroader with a bigger better motor.
