Title: Need advice with EFI
Post by: blknight87 on April 12, 2010, 01:44:08 PM
I found a guy here in grand junction who has a 90 or 91 samurai with the 1.3 EFI... he said his fuel pump is not working, and I told him that it could be the ECU... looking at my book, the fuel pressure at IDLE is 24 to 30 PSI... a pump costs 500 plus for a whole unit, and 340 for the pump alone... if, and I mean if it was not the pump, and it was the ECU, could he then take a regular samurai tank out of an older model and hook up an after market pump pushing 35PSI like they do with the tracker 1.6 16V install? I mentioned it to him, and he said they run like 90 PSI...  ??? am I on the wrong track here in trying to help him get it running again? or does he need a new pump, or ECU that match? thanks, any and all advice is greatfully appreciated...

You can run an external pump, its not 90psi its is around 30psi. The FSM supplement is available on http://www.suzukiinfo.com (http://www.suzukiinfo.com) although you often need a bit of patience to get on it these days. Check the wiring to the pump though and if you can try and feed the pump directly with 12V to test it.

ok, if I get power directly to the pump and it runs, it could be the ecu, or a relay.... if needed, like it was the pump that was faulty, would he have to wire it back to the ecu, or could he just wire up a switch to it that needs to be turned on in order to start the samurai.... like a toggle? it has a return fuel line so that would be ok right? I just want to help him the cheapest way possible since he is out of work and needs his vehicle to get around finding work... thanks for the input...

Could be just bad connections to the pump or in the wiring harness. I'm pretty sure that you can fit a Track/Kick pump in the tank, you may be able to source a used one cheaply.

You can put a track/kick pump into a fi Samurai tank but it sounds like he's got a relay or ECU control problem. A toggle 'could' work for the fuel pump but if the guy forgets he's going to run the battery down.... Checking the relay isn't a big deal... Try that...

I may have an ECU, but it's been sitting outside. I don't know if I would trust it

On an early samurai EFI setup, I'd suspect the ECU over anything else.  seems to be a common problem.  I think you can get rebuilt ones online fairly inexpensively.

ok, so.. I put power to the pump, and nothing after testing the relay and jumping the p/b to the b/w wire as it said to do in the fsm link I was directed to. so, yes, I hooked up power to the pump alone, and nothing... so, Black Zuk... have you tested the pump in your tank? if so, did it turn on? how much for pump, or pump and tank? i got a line on a tracker pump, but if yours works, it's the same yr and everything, and OEM is always better. so, shoot me a pm, or post up on here what you would like for it.. thanks for all the input guys.... *BLKNIGHT*

When I did the EFI conversion on my Sammi I used an aftermarket pump from Airtex (#E8445 45-65 psi,35gph) it'
s running a 1.6 8 valve TBI on the 1.3 with no problems since. So I'd say you can use an inline pump.

what yr is your sammy? if it was not original EFI that would work perfect, and I was going to keep my old tank out of my 87, but i didn't  >:( if yours is the newer model with EFI and has the pump in the tank, i didn't think you could suck through the pump in the tank... maybe I am wrong
