Title: Steering wheel lock
Post by: Reddog1 on July 04, 2004, 04:54:34 AM
I have a '91 Sami. When towing, you must leave the ignition key in, and leave in the ACC position. I don't like this.

How do you remove the pin (or) that locks the steering wheel?

Is it simple enough that you could post instructions? Any reason why I should not remove the steering wheel lock mechanism?

Why not just put your key in the ACC position and disconnect your battery?

Anyone who posts with knowledge on "how to" remove aka break a steering wheel lock may have spend some time "locked" themselves :P Maybe that is why you won't get a response here on Zukiworld ;)

Maybe I have been working in the prison system too long. I find it interesting that people have no problem leaving the key in the ignition.

I wonder if all insurance policies would pay for replacement if the Zuke were stolen?

My concern is not just to prevent battery drain. Disconnecting the battery, would be like turning the main breaker off in your house and leaving the key in the front door. I don't think that is a good idea.

lock the door with and leave a spare key in the ign.  ;D

just do what my grandpa does whenever u leave the car to go into a store or whatever take the keys! lol..they would be hard pressed to steal the car while it is in motion..and the 2-5mins u are in any gas station since it usually takes that long to get it all unhooked lol

and i know someone will say taking the keys out at every stop is to much trouble..but really when ur towing the car are u going to run errands and such? also u should be starting the car every 100-150miles (from what the book says)

part of the lock system i belive is so when u park up/down a hill and the car rolls it just roll into the curb( u shoulda turned the tires that way before u got out lol)

Mike71 - Looks like your suggestion "lock the door with and leave a spare key in the ign" is what most people are doing. My guess is this works for them even with the top off and a non-lockable tailgate  :o.

Thanks for the reply.

I disabled the steering lock on my Samurai many years
ago so the details are a little fuzzy. There's two break-a-
way bolts that hold the lock to the column, you'll have to
wreck these to get the lock off.I replaced mine with
standard bolts. To disassemble the lock mechanism  turn
the key to the "acc" position and insert a punch thru the
side hole, the tumblers should slide out.If you have
problems with this take it to a lock shop.Use a hack saw
to cut the end off the locking bolt where it slides into the
steering shaft.Put the whole menagerie back together
and you're done.
My Samurai sits in a garage so I don't worry about
theft.Besides, anybody who sees it parked is going to
assume that the steering is locked.
