Title: 2001 vitara auto with 220,000 miles questions

what should I be looking out for?  how good is the auto tranny? known issues?

220K?!?!?!  WOW! You should just keep doing whatever you were doing before IMO!

At 220K I would definitely do a timing belt/chain unless they have service records showing it has been done recently. Besides that if it runs and drives good while not making any strange noises it should be OK. Check for sloppy steering while driving (worn steering componets), odd engine noises, definitely check the oil... to get an idea if they changed it regularly and at proper levels, etc... Have a good look over and under it. Just be prepared for the usual high mileage repairs if you get it.
