Title: Transmission issues
Post by: marcello on May 17, 2010, 11:18:17 AM
Hi all,

YEsterday, I had a problem with my Tracker.  It is a 1997 4 door Tracker with the 4spd auto. sitting on 31's.  I was driving on the highway probably doing about 60 mph and all of a sudden, it is as if I had droipped the tranny in neurtral.  The shifty was still in drive but was just revving.  I pulled over to the side and tried reverse and I had reverse.  I then put it back in drive and it was working, so I leave again, and it shifted in the second and when it shifted into the third gear, I was dooing about 45 mph and still accelerating, it happeneed again, as if it dropped into neutral.  I pulled over, checked the fluid and all looked alright.  I turned the Tracker off and turned it back on, and that was the end of it.  Drove it all day yesterdaty and came into work today and not a hiccup.

I know that with the 31's, the tranny seems to be working hard on the highway, and a lot of times, it is as if the torque converter releases and then lockes up again.  It doesn't acutally drop gears but you can see the RPM actually go up a little and then back down.  But been doing that for a while now.

Any ideas what could be the cause of it, my understanding is that the 4spd is ECM controlled so I thaught that because I had shut off the engine and fired it back up, it has somehow reset something but somehow I think it is something mechanical....  My CEL is on but that is because I am running without a CAT.

I should mention that I do hear a slight whinning sound in the tranny but only at certain points....  hard to explain!!

I plan on runing it till it dies but ust looking for your opinions....

thanks!

Some love it, some hate it, I think you should add a bottle
of Lucas Trans treatment, I had an issue that I added slick50
auto trans treatment and it's never done it again, and I also
changed fluid so that might of helped, but it did this neutral
drop thing while in gear after freeway driving and stopping at
a stop sign on the offramp

Are you running a transmission cooler?
