Title: whiiiiiiiiining
Post by: 90Stomper on June 20, 2004, 03:48:02 PM
my tranny (manual)whines alot.  mostly 1st and 5th gear.  in fifth it goes away over 3600 rpm.  pilot is pretty new and throwout and clutch are only 2yrs old......  other than the noise it seems fine, fluid level, smell, no slippage etc. are ok. ???   any ideas ???

Check your rear diff and rear axle bearings. I've run across that very problem in many zukis over the last few years.

If you push in the clutch and it goes away Its probabally a bearing in the trans. Ive had quite a few go out. Its actually kinda common.

tranny may last for ages with a whine.its not a bad tranny to strip and rebuild and bearings can be obtained from a bearing shop.you will need pullers to remove the old bearings, and its best to refit new bearings with a press if possible.
factory manual has full instructions.

ummm thanks but i think i will give the screeeeeech kapow thing a big miss ;D  pluss for $50 you cant really go too wrong.  btw NC_ZUK nice ride, but i think you need a bigger tow hook 8)  'and i even like the color' ;)

LOL!! That hook is going away soon. I bought a Warn XD 9000 winch for 200.00 used and that was the hook on it. I will be ordering synthetic winch cable soon from Master Pull.

I don't blame you for wanting to miss the Screeeeeee kapow!! It wasn't pretty. the red in the pic is covering up the gear oil. (yes we cleaned up the oil and packed it out with us) I rode all weekend on a trail ride with it making aweful noises. Heck, most people thought that it was my fan belt squeeling. that is how bad the noise was :-/

I WOULD CHECK YOUR REAR PINION SEAL AND ALSO CHECK TO SEE IF REAR END HAS GHREASE IN IT. MY TRANNY WAS MAKING ALOT OF NOISE AND I GUESSED IT WAS ON THE WAY OUT BUT SURE ENOUGH THE REAR END WENT, FORTUNATELY A BUDDY OF MINE HAD AN EXTRA CENTER SECTION AND WAS NICE ENOUGH TO INSTALL IT FOR ME!! ;D

good idea but it seems a lil doubtful cause i would think if it was the rear the whine would be speed relitive, as it is gear relitive now (2nd,3rd,and 4th dont whine).  i am ganna change out tranys this weekend and then we will know for sure ;)  i will let ya know.

I think Mike is correct on this one. I have had two trannies fail like this. When the fluid change does not do much to correct the whining, as you keep driving it, the whining will become louder in 1st, then progress to whining in second, then third gear over time.Once second gear starts it will progress alot faster if it's the trans bearing). In my X-90 I puched it for thoudands of miles whining like this till it blew the trans apart :P I was curious how long it would last and it made it somewhere around 15K before it blew (from the start of the whining)  The bad part was it blew apart on the first day last winter that it hit single digit temps, was sleeting, I left my cell at home, had to walk dowm the interstate a couple of miles to the closest store and wait 2 hours for a friend to get off work and come get me 100 miles from home :P

Yea, looking back now it is to me too ;) My friend Bob that came to pic me up and haul the X home had driven it the weekend before it blew and asked me why I was still driving it like that. I just laughed and told him that I had to get a new trans, so I was just going to drive it till it blew. He gave me all kinds of smart ass comments on that ride home ::)
