Title: lights for '87 Sammy as Toad vehicle
Post by: edjahar42 on May 21, 2010, 01:08:36 PM
I'm going to pull my '87 Sammy on a tow bar and I don't want to use the lights with magnets, any suggestions? Can I simply tie into the wires on the car?
Thanks, Ed

you can tie into the light on the sami. if your sami is already wired to pull a trailer then just run a cord from the tow vehicle and plug it into the trailer lighting on the sami. if the sami does not have trailer lighting then you need to get your self a tail light converter box and wire the sami to pull a trailer. plugging the light into the car wiring will also make your marker lights work too.

I have two CHEAP trailer lights mounted to a 3 foot 1x3; the 1x3 has a hole on each end w/a pice of twine slightly longer.
I just drape it over my spare and bungee.

20 foot 4 wire to tow.

Takes 30 seconds to rig.

This is quite interesting, I'm planning to tow my Tracker to the Zuwharrie this year, and it's set up for towing my camper,  including the tailight conversion box. Jawman, are you saying I can just plug in the Tracker's tow lighting plug into my tow vehicles plug? That would sure make things easier.

...as long as you interface before the converter, it will work.

Then you will be using the Tracker's tail/brake lights = slick.

I flat tow my '87 Samurai and have it wired so the Samurai's rear lights are used when towing it.
I used a splitter box (diode) on the lights. It is like a "Y" splitter that doesn't allow the electricity backfeed through the stock wiring system. Works great and beats the hell out of messing with the magnetic lights.
Here is a diagram of what it is similar too :

That is a great idea, but I'm done cutting and soldering wires. The mag lites are on the way. Plug and play, simple.
