Title: New track/kick project, need help
Post by: Chris727 on May 25, 2010, 04:08:07 PM
Hi guys, new to the forum and I need some help, I just bought my first tracker/sidekick, it's a 91 2 door auto 1.6 8v 4x4, and want to put 33's on it, currently has Goodyear eagle ultra grip 225/60R16's.

Is it possible to put a sami t-case on it so I can run 6.5:1 gearing?  ???  if so what type of work would be involved?

For the lift I want to do a 3" body lift, 2" coil spacer lift, and use OME springs and front struts to get another 1.5", is that a good setup? and will '91 crown vic shocks still work for the rear?

And some other stuff I want to do is a front locker, spool for the rear, 2" or 2 1/4" exhaust, and custom bumpers.

It'll be mostly for mudding and some trails, but will have some highway time as well.

If it's gonna see some highway time as well, then you'd probably want to stay away from the samurai case and the 6.5 kit, unless you do end up running 33s.  But it might take a lot of mods to get 33s to fit, and then your engine's power may be lacking.  The reason being, the samurai case has a high range reduction as well.  So installing the 6.5 gears for the low range also lowers the high range (I think to 1.72:1) which is almost what your stock low range is now with the Tracker case (1.82:1), so keep that in mind.
As for the rest, up to you!  Just: have fun doing it!

Thanks for the help  :)

Sounds easier to just do a 4.24 kit and try and find the right R&P gears (having a hard time finding them online though :()
I don't mind chopping the fenders and stuff for 33's either but 31's are as small as I'd like to go on this one, most highway time would be from 5-10 minutes, just to run to the store for gas and stuff.

With the taller springs and spacers you are going to be running your suspension with the struts almost topped out and your CV's at a tight angle. If you are wanting enough lift to clear 33's I would recommend the Calmini 3 + 3 combo lift. It costs more but already has all of the parts included to correct for the CV angles, CV's topping out, alignment issues etc... Plus it is a strong kit that will hold up to many years of abuse on and off road.

It will ride stiffer than stock, but I personally liked it (when your rolling 33's down the interstate at 65 mph you don't want a lanky suspension).

You can fit 33's on a kick with the Calmini 2" suspension and 3" body lift with a lot of trimming (including moving the floor boards back) but the 3" makes it easier.

You can give the Undertaker from Trail Tough a try, but then you might be a bit over-geared unless you can find some gears from an automatic.

Another alternative is the Kicker 3 or Shogun kit.  That will mount a Samurai case to the back of the Tracker case.  You will need new drivelines but that way you get a 30% reduction in high range (from the Samurai case) and you get the dual t-cases to play with off road.

Zuk I was actually looking at that 6" Calmini lift, probably will end up going with it whenever I can afford it, cost $1500-$2000 Canadian to get it here though (I'm in Ontario)

Drone looked at those to, still a bit pricey for me  :(, would any R&P gears do good enough? like the 5.12 for 31's? if I did the math right going from 4.62 to 5.12 should correct for a 32" tire  ???

Other people have done it and liked it.  You will have to let those with automatics chime in on how their rigs handled after doing the 5.12 swap.

Yeah your auto should have 4.62 gears, so finding 5.12 is most practical for you...the only other options (I believe) are the ultra-rare 5.38, 5.63, and then there's Richmond's 5.83 that is temporarily discontinued.
Skyhiranger has some thirds for sale quite often, he may have some still, check in on him.

It will ride stiffer than stock, but I personally liked it (when your rolling 33's down the interstate at 65 mph you don't want a lanky suspension).
I can vouch for this.  Running the 3" suspension only (no body) and 30s in my 90 5spd.  Was driving on highway yesterday and didn't realize how fast I was going.  Speedo read 70mph and it was just buzzing along comfortably  :)
(then I realized speedo is 10% off, so 70mph is really 77mph...I slowed down ::) )
