Title: rock sliders
Post by: blknight87 on May 26, 2010, 07:09:28 PM
so... I got some 4" angle iron from a buddy, and it's some stout stuff!!! following ACK's how to's on his page for the |removethispart|@ home DIY rock sliders, this was really simple! after removing the plastic paneling, and drilling out the spot welds as he stated to do, I then folded up the body trim under the rocker panel as he instructed. used a ball ping hammer and flatened it out really easily.
didn't get any pics of that, sorry...

well, after stuffing the angle iron up onto the rocker, I held it up with a jack, and a jack stand, the jack wasn't tall enough lol.. but it worked!
I then took some 2" angle iron of the same thickness, I believe it's all 1/4"... and made my front and rear brackets. well I had to do mine a bit differently because I am running lights mounted to the rear undercarriage of my sammy. you will see in the pics. any ways, the home made brackets.

the front, that I welded, not bolted... to the frames shock support area.

the rear, that I welded to the same thing on the rear, but had to take it to the rear of it, cause of the lights.

I then held it in place with vicegrips and tacked it in place to the frame and slider.

some not soo good weld jobs.. I am not used to a stick welder. I prefer wire fed but hey, this welder was 99 bucks at harbor freight and is a 115V or 230V and my neighbor wired me in a breaker and plug for the 230V... he rocks! any ways, some more pics, I only got 1 side done, I will finish up the other side next week on days off. enjoy...

This post is why I created Ack's FAQ!

The folks at Offroad.com deserve the credit for the DIY Rocksliders article.  I only made it easy to find.

Okay, I think I can go 8 hours without looking at myself in the mirror now...  Hey - it's bedtime!  ;D

did you cut the body to install those or just weld them around the body?

did you cut the body to install those or just weld them around the body?

as in ACK's FAQ's... I had to drill out the tack welds holding the plastic trim holder to the body. no cutting of the body, only had to trim the rubber between the fender flares, and the tub.. just enough to fit the sliders in... they are cut to almost excactly the length of the tubs body... it looks really sharp how I did it! but damnit man... I need a torch!!! lol   grinders are hard to fab a pc of metal.. lol

so, as we all can read, I have been doing my own rock sliders, well I got the other side up, and welded up just the same as the other side. I decided not to bolt mine, as I like things solid, I can post pics if needed, but it's the same process as the ones above. any ways, any questions feel free to ask or check out ACK's faq's in his signature. thanks ACK! they rock!!
