Title: What parts are needed to swap from carb toTBI Single point injection?
Post by: cj on June 13, 2010, 05:55:42 PM
I am looking at converting an auto 1.6 8v Kick from carby (that's the only way they came in OZ) to the throttle body/single point injection.

I need to know exactly what parts do I need to source?

I figure I will need the throttle body, manifold, air cleaner, wiring to the ECM, VSS, distributor, gas tank and O2 sensor. What about the coil? Anything else?

The ECM too, but you knew that, and you might just need the
in tank fuel pump, unless the carb model came with one, and
are you sure you got a 1.6 or is it a 1.3 rare model with the 5.62
diff gears ???

Thanks Wild and yes, I meant the ECM too. It is a 1.6 that I have just converted to 3 spd auto. It has locked 5.12's and 31's. I have a spare in-tank pump but the tanks are different so I need to grab a tank too. I have a line on everything I think I need but the ECM as it already sold, just need to find one of them too.

I have done a mild cam grind and fitted an adjustable cam gear and headers too, just need to get it all dialled in.

My custom ground cam is one of the best mods I think
I made, it really made a difference in the torque and power
band, I often forget that I have a custom cam, just because
it's been so long.

What grind did you get on it ???

I haven't got the specs handy. They are in a friends shed which I won't get to till next weekend. I know the grind I put in my old 16v did wonders.

I assume the ECM for the auto is slightly different to the manual to allow for an idle-up but could I get away with a manual ECM if need be?

I'm not sure, but the auto has no computer, and the only idle
up I know of is with the increase in electrical load, like lights
and maybe the heater fan

Yes, I know there is no seperate ECM for the auto but I wasn't sure if there may be some difference in ECM between the manual and the auto versions. What controls the torque converter lockup? As we only got the carby version our 3 spd auto doesn't have a lockup. I am just trying to make sure I am aware of any issues that I may face.

Ohh, ya, forgot about TC lockup, it must be in the ECM
because it unlocks if you flog the throttle

Mine hasn't worked for a long time, but it's not a DD now so
I don't miss it

ECU controls the TC lock up relay. The auto ECU should also have a brake pedal switch and an A/T oil pressure switch. What ECU should you have? I'm pretty sure that I have an auto ECU here for an 8V.
If you can get the ally pipe that goes across the top of the engine from the throttle body, it has pipes for the idle bypass and stuff. Depending on the model you may need an EGR valve to keep the CEL off.

The gear I am looking at has the crossover pipe. My egr is now blocked of due to the headers I have fitted. It seems getting the ECM is the issue.
