Title: winch
Post by: SIRed on June 25, 2010, 06:54:09 PM
I have recently aquired an 88 Samurai running 31's. I was thinking of adding a winch to it. What is a good size winch for this little vehicle?

8k pound

Next winch I look at will be a Warn 9.0RC or some other lowmount modified to the same size as I have come to the conclusion that I never need to winch far so I don't need much rope on the drum and I can always carry a plasma rope extension if needed. This will help keep the weight down and the performance up.

Whats a lowmount modified winch?

I went with a 6000# winch off Ebay. It has worked fine the couple of times I used it. It's not the fastest but it only cost like $240 shipped. I got a snafchblock and 100' synthetic rope along with the 80' wicnh cable. I thought about the 8000# winch but the weight was just about double and I don't use it that often to carry that hanging on my front bumper. 43 lbs. vs 94 lbs.

I was looking at a 5,000lb winch off of harbor freight. No more than this thing weighs I think 8k may be a little overkill. I figured that winch with a snatchblock will double the pull.

We call the 8724, highmounts and most other winch styles are lowmounts.  The mod I am talking about is to the drum. You can shorten, lengthen or change the diameter if you can weld.

A bigger winch has a much faster line speed, and still will
pull the truck single line, yes over kill, but more reliable under
fire, when you need it.

More is always better.  I have the 8k Harbor Freight on my Samurai.  It's now on sale for $299.00.  I haven't had a chance to use it yet but I hope it proves sueful at the Melt next weekend.

I have a cheap chinese 12k winch. Changed to synth rope to save some weight. works great, even done a couple of challenge type events.

I would not go below 8k, zuks are light, but it's nice to have the capacity to help other heavier (jeeps) vehicles. I even pulled a heavy Grand Cherokee that was really stuck last outing.

Hey Ack do you have a wiring diagram for your winch? I have the same thing but no remote. Harbour Freight doesn't sell just the remote so I want to get one from Ebay but would like to get my hands on any OEM paperworwork that would have come with the winch 1st.

I have the same winch and have been very happy with it.  I would not want to run anything smaller because it has not been overkill helping pull out others!  I have straight pulled a nearly completely sunken, unrunning Samurai out of the creek with it and I tested it pulling out this Tahoe!  Used it a few times for myself too!

I can see if I still have mine.  I too got a cheap remote for it off ebay.  Much better with the remote.

We put a remote on BRD HNTR's Tracker from Roadless Gear:

I run an in-dash mount on my SJ that works fine for me.  Just a simple two way toggle switch that has an arming switch.

Thanks for the link. That remote looks like an excellant deal for my Vit. Have you had any issues with hook up or use to date?

I got to use my Harbor Freight 8k winch "at" the 2010 Zookimelt...

Actually, I used it to pull both the 2300 pound Samurai and a 1200 pound camp trailer onto a trailer towed by Redbeards' 2010 Cummins-powered Dodge Dually pickup.  I blew the 9-year-old clutch 120 miles from my destination...

During the 'Melt I whanged the spare tire mount and had to mount the spare on the front of the winch bumper using the winch to hold everything in place for the trip home.

I am happy with the results - although I didn't get to use it to pull anyone Jeep-like in nature out at the Badlands...  >:(

Me too.  In-dash hardwired two way switch and I also put a switch on the control box, so whoever is holding the cable when they are winding it back up can run the last foot or two in by themselves.

I never replied to this, sorry about that.  No issues so far, other then a sticky solenoid that has nothing to do with the switch.  :)

mrhawk:  That is a really clean winch mount.  Are you running a metal dash in your or is that plate from a different vehicle?  I thought the SJ-413's didn't have metal dashes.

Thank you :)

It's just a metal plate over where the stock radio were. The plate itself is from a post ww2 german tank :D

Of course, Post WWII German tank plate.  I should have noticed earlier.

just thought i'd show what i did.
i mounted the control box under the hood, took the control socket out of it and mounted it in the cab.
the control cable reaches the winch, so i can see whats happening when i spool up.

also check the weight of each winch. most 6k winches are built off the same platform as a 8 or 9.5k winch therefor the weight is the same....might as well have the higher pulling power (jeeps aren't getting any lighter, and that's why you have the winch right, to get them out of your way when there stuck.LOL)

All this talk about talk about remotes got me thinking. Mine came with two. A regular wired in remote that plugs in and has a 10' cord and wireless one that looks like a keyfob alarm switch. So far all I've used is the wireless and it works great. It works from quite a distance so I can operate the winch from the end of my rope or in the car.

Just a heads up, remember to never leave the winch lever in the "in" position. I did that, and the crappy keychain remote shorted out in my pocket, and the winch powered up. Destroyed the fairlead a shackle, the hook, the end of the wire and bent my 3/4" shackle hanger on my bumper...

Vortex winch off Ebay. Never put in my pocket and when not in use, I put the switch on the winch to the plug in remote position and since it'sot plugged in, I'm pretty safe.
