I've got a 96 Tracker with a 3 speed auto transmission and i'm getting the 740 TCC Circuit Malfunction code coming up on a scan. Looking around on the internet shows that this is a torque converter clutch circuit. Has anyone ever had this code come up? And what did you do to fix it? Is there a solenoid in the transmission that needs to be replaced? If so, any idea where it would be in the transmission? Could it be changed with the tranny in the truck, or will I have to drop it to replace the solenoid? The truck runs fine, but the gas mileage has went south in a big way. Could someone lend some knowledge and help me out?

okay - so the codes is for a torque converter clutch electrical circuit malfunction. there is a relay under the hood on the right for the solenoid. if the wiring and the relay is okay then you have to remove the solenoid and perform some tests to it. my diagrams dont show were the solenoid is in the tranny so i dont know if the tranny has to come out but it is only a 1.4 hour job to replace so my guess is it can be done in the car. the main relay supplies power to the relay trigger (blue/black wire) and the ecm grounds that wire. the feed to the solenoid comes from the brake switch (wht/red wire into the relay) and out from the white wire to the tranny. i hope this helps . ps, the reason your getting bad mileage is because the torque converter is not locking up. one other thing to check is the fluid level in the tranny - the curcuit passes thru a pressure switch in the tranny before the solenoid.

It's an easy job. Just pull the trans. pan and you'll see it there. Go and buy one first and then you will know what it looks like. I did my dads in 30min.

Thanks alot guys, I really appreciate it! I went to the dealership this morning to order the solenoid. The parts guy said you just drop the pan and there it is. So once I get it to see what it looks like I shouldn't have a problem finding it. Derek, thanks alot for the info on the wiring, I will check it out tomorrow as I replace the solenoid. Ppltrak, did the solenoid fix the problem on your dads Tracker?
I pretty much figured the drop in mileage was due to the converter not locking up. Hopefully this will fix that, gas prices are pretty bad here.
I'll try to report back in case anyone else has this problem in the future.

I put the solenoid in lastnight, and it seems to have fixed the problem. The torque converter is locking up around 45-50 mph like normal now. The check engine light is still on, so maybe I haven't driven the vehicle enough for it to cycle off, or possibly I need to unhook the battery and let the computer reset itself.
I just wanted to update in case someone down the road has the same issue come up.

You will probably have to take it to an auto parts store and have them use a scantool on it to clear the codes. I believe you have an OBDII computer.

Yep, the '96 FSM Volume 1 indicates on page 7A-9 indicates that the TCC "energises to redirect transmission fluid to the converter clutch control valve in the fluid pump assembly".
On page 7A-28 figure 37 shows the TCC mounted under the transmission pan in the corner where a round thing called the Moduator Seal is mounted outside of the pan. My scanner is busted or I would post a scan right now... sorry.
It looks like an easy-to-get-at part.
