Title: Tire Help!
Post by: paintman on July 07, 2010, 09:08:50 PM
I'm in a trade with the local tire shop and can afford to get any tire I want.I mostly drive on the street and don't want a real noisy tire but want a fairly aggressive tire for the weekends.I will be running a 30-9.50-15.The tire shop suggested the Yoko Geolander a/t but it will be a while until they are available. With that being the case they suggested the Hercules Terra Trac a/t?
I don't have any experience with this brand and am worried it won't be very good.I also would like a little more aggressive tread than either of these tires but still don't want the noise of a mud terrain.Any suggestions?

I have used and enjoyed Hercules tires in the past.  I just took a set of Terra Tracs off my GMC Sierra (replaced with BFG KM2's).  They had almost 40000 miles on them, and still were street legal.

Hercules (made by Cooper) makes solid tires.  The Terra Tracs are a good street tire, and do well on dirt roads.  Mud is another story, I slid all over in the mud, But thats to be expected with an AT tire.

I have the BFG KM's on my samurai and the KM2's on my GMC, and neither are overly noisy.

I've got Goodyear MT/Rs ("old" style, before they made the Kevlar style) 30x9.50R15 on my 90 Tracker, kinda noisy but definitely not deafening...usually the engine chugging away at 4,000 RPM on the highway drowns out the tire noise.

Then on my 03 Silverado I have Fierce Attitude MT (by Goodyear) that are E range, they're a siped mud terrain, which gives you the water displacement characteristics of an AT, and they're not overly noisy...yet.  I think they're getting a little louder as they wear.  Plus, they look bitchin' and have a deep-inset rim protector and have decent sidewall protection (which is important because my mother sometimes drives this truck and has a tendency to rub curbs a lot of the time  >:( which is one reason I'll never have 20" rims)

So far, my dad has had the best mud terrain I've seen yet, on his 8,000lb+ Ford F250 PSD.  35" E-range mudders, called Hankook Dynapro MT RT03.  Priced right (compared to other brands at the time) and he's got over 50,000 on them now, they might last him 60,000, and they were quiet for the first 40,000 miles.  They've got some damn heavy sidewall tread.  And I know they make them in a 30x9.50R15  ;D

But, if you're not looking at all for a mud terrain, stick with an aggressive one like the BFG AT, or General's AT2, something like that is aggressive with the AT characteristics.

Check out the Pro Comp Xtreme  m/t's.  They are actually quieter than my old long trail r/t's.  Don't have to worry about "tracking" in the road or grip problems.  Extra heavy duty sidewall.  I use them for rock crawling and haven't had any problems with them.  great all around tire.  not what you expect from a m/t.

Big fan of the Cooper Discoverer STT's. Aggressive tread, siped, long life, not too noisy (especially for a MT).  8)
