Okay so I'm considering putting a better cam in my tracker. 1.6L 8v, 1990. Problem is, I live in California, welcome to emissions testing HELL (and the smog isn't as bad as they say it is, this is the clearest summer I've seen in YEARS in the Central Valley).
Anyways, I've had a few buddies tell me it shouldn't have a problem passing smog, especially if I go with a mild torquer tam and not a high-perf top-end one. But I want to hear from the experts here.
I'm looking at a torquer cam anyways because I care more about lower-end than top-end grunt. How will this affect my emissions testing?
In my mom's Jeep with a SBC 350, it has an RV cam, and we ground a new timing mark on the harmonic balancer to "fool" the smog tech (he knew what was going on but he helped us get it to pass), so it would appear to have correct timing.
Anyone know about doing something like this on a G16A engine?
Next ??? is which cam? I've been leaning towards the Hawk torquer cam but even then, there's more than one option.

I have a custom ground cam shaft with an Engle P-5 grind on it,
really helped the engine perform better and have never had a problem
passing the smog test.
What will really bump the emissions is a rough lopey idle, so a torquer
cam should work down low, and have a smooth idle, so you should be fine,
an RV cam is designed to run at like 4000-5000 RPM, and is not usually a
good match for an engine that you want big low RPM torque numbers

What about top end, will a torquer cam typically mess with that, or does it leave that alone? I don't want to put something in that would limit the top end while boosting lower end grunt, kinda looking for some lower end grunt with no affect on top end performance.
Who did your custom grind?

Engle Cams in Santa Monica Ca. did my cam, cost me about $200
and it's been more than 10 years now.
The top end did not get messed with, they gave it more lift and
changed the duration a bit, but not enough to give it a different
idle just perked up the power, I noticed it on the hillls the most
