Title: 4wd switch
Post by: Dr.Venkman on July 08, 2010, 09:21:45 PM
So I bought a Sami just under a week ago and I've been going through and fixing the little problems it has here and there, changing the fluids etc. Today my goal was to fix or at least solve why both rear backup lights didn't work. I found out that while it had a backup switch on the transmission, there were two wires (red and yellow) above it not connected, so I will need to order a new switch, thats fine. The other thing I was supposed to solve today was the 4wd light. I traced pretty much all the wiring that I could, it all looks fine. The only thing that doesn't look fine is the 4wd switch. For some reason it features a yellow and a red wire...meanwhile it is supposed to a blue/black and black wire. So my thinking is that someone prior to me had tried to fix it, used a backup switch and perhaps it worked perhaps it didnt work, either way it doesn't work now. If you have any ideas let me know, however I think that replacing this 4wd switch will do the trick, however I cannot seem to find any online anywhere.

What year is your Sami?  I took a look at the parts list for the 88 (nice middle year) and both the backup and the 4WD switch show the same part number.

A quick & easy test would be to short the connecting wires together with the ignition on - the respective lights should turn on.

If you need random parts you can't find anywhere try giving Hawk Suzuki a call.  They are great for finding those one off parts that nobody else has in stock.

I have an 87' the only parts list I can find is for all models of Samurai, which doesn't seem to include some parts, or maybe I'm just missing something. I have found the part on ebay, but certainly if i can use a backup switch that would do as well (seeing as it is cheaper.)

Edit: I shorted out the 4wd indicator wires, which works, and I did the same for the reverse wires, it worked. Great idea, thanks!

The listing that I have is 86 ~ 88 - so same switch (37620-80000) fits in both locations on your '87
