Title: Mileage
Post by: kubik1981 on July 09, 2010, 07:48:18 PM
My brother is getting married for the second time and wants me as his best man. i like 3 hours north of him in Michigan (he lives in Ohio). The question is it is all highway driving to get to his house i have a 96 16v 5sp manual all stock except exhaust and intake systems. And when i do 70 it is doing about 3400 to 3500 rpms, is this to hard on the engine. The engine is in good working order I am running Castrol GTX high millage oil. Will the high rpms for that long hurt the engine?

main thing just make sure you keep an eye on your oil, and watch the water temp, it will tell you when it is being worked too hard

im just as bad with my civic, i autocross it on the weekends, and it gets changed twice a month... but when you run an integra engine with a civic si transmision, you see the rev limiter quite a bit. and 80mph on the freeway is at 4k redline is 6500

i saw a few things on spike tv on saturdays on them. they were making dyno proven power with them. the main thing with any engine is to keep up on the basic things, oil changed and always tuned up.

I have made 3 trips down to Bend, Oregon from Seattle in my 96, highway most of the way followed by playing around off the beaten path for a while then a trip back home, for the Fall Adventure Challenge.  She hasn't had a complaint yet, you should be fine.

With Synthetics oil you should be able to go 5000+ per oil change though.

You should be fine. I use to drive my 8v 3 hours to my parents house regularly without any problems, and I hear the 8v don't like revs as much as the 16v do.

If you're concerned about it, then maybe plan ahead a few hours so you can maybe take a break after an hour of driving?  Catch a quick bite to eat or something while it cools down.  Check fluids and then get back on the road.  Carry some extra oil, antifreeze, and denionized water with you in case you notice some slight fluid loss.
My $0.02  ;)

I also have a 96 16v 5spd, I have aproximately 160k on the engine, and to be honest I think it's happiest when cruising on the highway between 3500 and 4000 rpms.  Just hums along nice, I wouldn't worry about a 3hr trip.  Is the trip exceptionally "hilly"? I find that's the only time I feel like I'm putting a strain on the motor, usually need to down shift to maintain speed going uphill.

The thought is "nice" but the engine really doesn't care, as long as it's not
over heated, and the oil is full you can run it for days at a time, it has no
feeling, it doesn't feel better because you stopped to give it a break, now
your butt might feel better, but the engine at 4000 RPM is quite happy

I drove non-stop, with the exception of fuel stops for 12 hours straight
going to Utah and also to the Easter Jeep Safari, and have logged almost
300,000 miles on my 89 SideKick

You will be fine.  I have driven mine for 5+ hours at 70-75mph (35-3600RPM) several times and it doesn't care.  Like was said...keep the filter and oil changed and at the proper level...no matter if you are running synthetic or conventional oil.

It's not a big block chevy, them little motors like the RPM, It will be fine if the motor is in good working condition. My Mom had a 99 4runner that was 4cyl 5 speed and it an about 3800 |removethispart|@ 70 it's still running great

Have a good trip
