I have started on another Sammy ;D I have front and rear ARB Air Lockers on my current one but on the one im starting I want to know what , in your opinion, the best mechanical locker is and why. Thanks guys.
-
anyone? ???
-
I think the gearless locker is a good idea but it's not on the market any more. All the benifits of a regular mechanical locker without the clicking, ratcheting, and banging.
-
That's because the gearless locker that was made for the suzukis were only prototypes, not production units. They didn't put them into production, because out of 250 units, all but 2 had fatal problems. Currently the only mechanical locker Brent will sell, is the Detroit E Z Locker, because from what he has told me, since Richmond Gear bought out Powertrax...the parent company for Lock-Right...they are very problematic now. But the E Z Locker is a very dependable unit. The only thing that is likely to cause you any grief about the way the locker works, is if you have even a slightly bent housing. A truss or a heavier housing from Sky Manufacturing would take care of that problem.
Hope that helps.

That's the same thing I heard from NorthCoast when I was looking for one. I went the detroit EZ route w/ Suzuki side gears. So far so good!
-
i got lockrights front and rear.they are cheap, easy to install and are awesome offroad.i disconnect the front onroad with free wheel hubs.the rear kicks a little onroad and makes some funny noises but you soon get used to it.
I LOVE MY LOCKRIGHTS!! ;D

I've got a Lockright in my Zuk and I love it too! Works great and still gives me good driveability on the road.
-
Oh yeah, there was another point that I wanted to give. There are 2 different version of the same locker. One with sidegears, and one without. The one without is much more forgiving to housing bend, and pavement manners.
Hope that helps.

you guys rock it. thanks.
-
so you guys think no on the couplers?
-
I have the Lock Right that uses the existing spider gears and it works fine. I have used the No-Slip with the couplers in a different vehicle, and it worked well too. I've installed about 5 Lock Rights/No Slips in different vehicles, and all have worked very well.
-

Hmmmm...... That is funny!! Richmond bought Powertrax... BUT THEY DIDN"T CHANGE THE MOLDS!! ;) So how is it that they are "suddenly" problematic? ::) Sounds like certain vendors have deals with certain locker manufacturers ;)
I have been running Lockrites for years with no problems. IF they are installed currectly you will have no problems. I just bought 2 new Lockrites to go into my Yota axles. One is an old Lockrite made by Powertrax, one is a new lockrite made by Richmond. Funny thing is that they are BOTH identicle ;D I guess I'll have to wait and see though :-X

I agree on the manufacturing issue. I've installed Lock rights and No-Slips from before and after the Richmond Gear purchase, and I haven't noticed any difference.
-
I heard nothing on the decline in quality, just a royal PITA to get any of them warrantied.

Now that I have heard
-
The message I got was little stuff...poor packaging( stuff not secure properly in box and banginging around) poor photo copy instructions and the warranty issue. I had no experience w/ either at the time I purchased. Main decision factor was locker price and low shipping $$ from Ohio to PA.
-
Not that I have heard
I know three people having issues with warranties on their lock rites. there has been posts on ORC that I know of as well about this issue. Don't get me wrong, i like 'em, just letting you know what I know.

About the lock rights, can somebody tell me what are couplers? What's the dif with and without?
thks

The "couplers"replace the stock side gears, the locker listing with out the couplers re-use the stock side gears. If you do re-use the side gears, swap them side to side, they have a less stressed gear face in this configuration and seem to mesh better. I have noticed the lock rites that re-use the sock side gears seem less picky about a sligghtly bent housing and seem to have smoother (for a lunchbox locker) road manners. HTH!
-
Thks. Just one last doubt: if you can reuse the existing side gears, why would anyone want to get the couplers unless the original side gears are damaged or welded? Durability?
-
i have had a lockright rear for nearly 2 years now,and it was used when i got it.(real lockright)no problems.my front lockright is a new"richmond" lockright.no problems.
you only need the couplers if your gears are badly worn, ive not seen a badly worn coupler yet!!!
follow the install manual TO THE LETTER.and they go in a treat.no problems.
I LOVE MY LOCKRIGHTS.!! ;D

I've had both in a sammy over the last couple of years, not a problem with the Detroit, but the Lock-Rite on the other hand....SUCKED!!!! It self destructed in a couple of months, followed the instructions to the letter.
