Title: 1986 Suzuki Samurai
Post by: jrbblack93 on August 01, 2010, 03:46:49 PM
Got my Samurai for Christmas as a gift from my grandparents. Drove it down from Utah to Arizona. Before I got it, it had been sitting in a field for quite sometime and it needed some work. So my Grandpa put in 2500 to rebuild the entire engine, reupholstered the entire cab (seats, floor, door panels), put in a radio and got a new antenna.

When I drove up to Utah to pick up the Sami I found out that being 6 foot 6 inches does have its disadvantages sometimes. So I had to make a new seat bracket for the drivers seat to move it back a couple of inches. That way I can now comfortably drive, steer, shift, and actually press the gas, brake, and clutch pedals without getting in a wreck. I will put up some before and after pics soon.

ya its weird first second and third all go in perfectly fine and i haven't tried 5th though but my mechanic says its a clutch and pressure plate and i think that the bolt on the transmission shifter is sheered so i have to look at that though and see. hopefully getting the parts tomorrow

If the shifter bolt is sheared the shifter will be sloppy but still go into gear.  Unless the bolt fell down and is wedged in there.

Does it just not work or does it not want to engage?

idk its being really weird now. I went to go pick it up and drive it home and it all of a sudden wanted to go into 4th gear so i don't know.  but near the end of the trip it started grinding when i tried to put it in gear so hopefully its just the clutch

Does it shift smoothly into gear when the engine is off?

Well, either your syncro's are completely shot or your right on the money with the clutch.  Luckily with the divorced transfer case the transmission is pretty easy to pull out.  :)

ya i had my neighbor pull out my tranny and replace the clutch for me.... well i soon found out while having to move it into my garage, because it was gonna rain, that the shifter now is insanely sloppy... i think it is the bolt this time but not sure. if it is the bolt what are the characteristics of it..... oh and where is the bolt located i am not sure where it is i pulled off the first boot and halfway pulled off the second boot.. but is the bolt underneath those or is it further down? if you could send me a pic of where it is at and directions of how to get at it i would be very appreciated....

Here you go.  http://www.zukiworld.com/month_090102/feature_hawkshifterpinfix.htm (http://www.zukiworld.com/month_090102/feature_hawkshifterpinfix.htm)

When putting things back together you may have misplaced the bushing.  On my brothers Samurai we did the sloppy shifter fix from Hawk Suzuki, it's worked great for a few years until it was sold

Here are just a couple of pictures of the Sami.

The wheels.... i wanna paint them a matte black. what do you guys think?

Security Box.... my grandpa installed this and bolted it to the floor board...

Cobra CB Radio..... Still no antenna connected.... It is bolted onto my security box in the back easily accessible.

Middle of Seats..... That little metal thing right in between the shifter is my holder for the CB Mic...

There is always something to work on.  :)

Where are you going to mount your Antenna?  For the Arizona wheeling I would try posting in the Adventure forum, might be a few people that know some areas for you to try.

I put mine on the back bumper, keeps it out of the way for the most part.  I used to have it mounted on the side, behind the rear wheel but I just ripped it off on the trees.

Ya thats what i am thinking  to just mount the antenna on the back bumper.
do you think you can show me a pic of how you mounted it. i just dont know
how i should mount it on the bumper. if you could that would be great.

I have a stock push bar on my front end and I mounted my antenna right to that using a mirror mount bracket for semis I have it just right of center and have a very heavy duty spring on it so trees do not snap it in half.

I am running a custom rear bumper, so I just bolted it straight to it.  I don't bother with a spring and haven't had it break yet.  The range is a bit limited, but I mainly use it for line of sight anyway.

ok thanks i will have to take both of those in consideration. i might combine the best of both of them and put a spring on the bottom while mounting the antenna itself on the back bumper... i think i am just gonna drill a couple of holes on the bumper.

There are so many different lift options its ridiculous.

What exactly do you want to do with the zuk?  That will determine your lift.

RUF and SPOA are the most common, along with YJ conversions and missing links.  Expect to change out the steering too when you lift it (depending on how high you go).

hey sorry it took so long to get back to everybody on this forum. I want to do alot of mudding, possibly some really mild rock crawling but thats about it. it is going to be my everday driver so it has to be street legal and be alright running on the street more than in the mud.
