On the J Reg it sounds like the steering box is loose.  There is a screw on the top of the steering box that may need to be adjusted, I have seen them strip out before and cause the loose steering you are talking about.  Usually caused by an accident.  I would pop the hood and have someone turn the steering wheel left to right, see if you can spot what is loose.
