Title: ??V6 does and don'ts?? *PICS-PICS*
Post by: 97TRAKIN on June 23, 2004, 09:10:33 AM
I'm supposed to take delivery of a brand new 2004 Tracker tomorrow. I have read about using to heavy a oil and a few other don'ts on here.
I traded the 2000 2-door 2.0 Traker and it had valve train rattle upon start up.
How can I avoid this with the new truck?

*AND YES I'M GOING TO WHEEL THE SNOOT OUT OF IT WITH THE 30 DAY TAGS STILL ON IT JUST LIKE I DID WITH THE 2- DOOR WHEN I FIRST GOT IT!*

I got her home!***

Well, you can help eliminate valve train noise by properly breaking in the motor.....

The best thing is, use the factory recommended weight of oil. From what I'm given to understand, the wrong weight of oil will shorten the life of the timing chain tensioners dramatically!

I'll tell you what was recommended to me for my XL7 and it worked.  Go with the manufacturer's recommendations on the viscosity which I think is 5W-30 or 40.  Get yourself the WIX Gold filter from NAPA and use the best synthetic or Dino oil you can afford.

Mine was clattering like crazy and it sounds like a new one now.

As I understand it the viscosity is critical and the oil filter must have a check valve and bypass in it, two things you don't get in the WALLYWORLD filters!!!

The people on this BB are the BEST!!!

Good Luck

Gilty ;D

Thanks. I couldn't remember the factory recommendation for the oil viscosity. I also found out the the earlier v6 has a problem with the oil pump chain failing and causing the oil pump to stop.....that's a duh about what happens! Also, the tensioners on the timing chain are made out of the wrong material and wear out sooner than they should, the newer replacements are a much better metal. But other than that, they are a relatively bulletproof engine.
Also, does anyone know what they changed around 02 to make the extra 10hp with the 2.5? In 01 they made 155, the current one puts out 165. I am curious what they changed to make more power, computer software, exhaust, intake manifold, airbox, what?

How about 2.7, that ought to make 10 HP More

 The 2.7 makes about 188hp.

I think the exhaust, it runs the same as the XL.7 now.

Very nice.  How wide are those wheels?  Are they the usual 5.5 inchers?  Also what does the black air dam do?  Is the interior leather or cloth?

What black air dam? If you are refering to the thing on the hood it is a stone/bug deflector. Now instead of rocks hitting the hood and windshield I get to hear them rolling down the roof. Had one one the 2dr also.
It's more for looks.
The inside is cloth easier to clean in my opinion.
I'll get back to you on the wheels..

Want some of the ZR2 flares for your new ride? I got some. But, at a second glance, I'm not sure if they would work with all the plastic body cladding.

I was told by a Suzuki tech that all that was changed was the exhaust system, free'r flowing pre-cats and main cat. It was called the power up mod.
