Title: rebuild or replace engine
Post by: JesseWSmith on August 23, 2010, 04:10:49 PM
I have one cylinder that is 30 psi rest are 120.  I pured oil in the cylinder and rechecked and it jumped up >100. So I guess I am looking at rings/piston-who knows.  Speedo says 75,000, but i could be 275,000 for all I know.

Is it worth it to try to rebuild these sammy motors (??? bucks) vs replace (???).  Where can I even find a used engine?

This is depressing, I was looking forward to fixing my new toy-
thanks for the help.

Get a set of rings, some rod and main bearings and have the valves
either ground or replaced depending on their condition, then put in
a new water and oil pump and a new timing belt, you need a gasket
set and hone the cylinders, this will reuse the old pistons and go another
trip around the planet before you need another engine.

This is like $300 in parts and a whole lot of satisfaction that you brought the
engine back to life

Low Range Off Road has great service.  Sammy Pro is another good source when dealing with engine related items.

I bet you can find a good 1.6 8 valve to drop in it for about the same $ and less work and get more power to boot . But then of course, you won't have the satisfaction of building your own engine, several times if you've never done it before! >:D
