Title: quick winch question
Post by: cmatt1605 on August 24, 2010, 06:58:57 AM
ok so around Sc we really only have trails with some small hills and LOTS of mud. so i was wanting a winch JUST in case, but my samurai does not get stuck on our trails very often. i was looking at the 3000 lb superwinch and just using a snatch block every time. i already have the ARB 66' winch extension so length isn't an issue. and there are ALWAYS trees around to winch to. basically my question is will the 3000lb winch with a snatch block be enough to get the samurai out of the mud?

I tried a smaller winch when I first got into Zuk's and hated it.... The mud can/will act like a suction cup causing a need for much more pull than the weight of your vehicle... Many people here have purchased the inexpensive 8000# winches from Harbor Freight and have been happy with them. Since my first small winch I have always ran 8000# winches and they have never let me down.

HTH,
Zig

like most things... you are going to get what you pay for, and the juggle is not over paying for what you need.
Maybe cruise Craigslist for a used winch and get a bigger better brand of winch for less money than you can get one new.
I think you are better off buying a hand operated come-along than an under powered or cheap winch.
When you need the winch you are going to really want it to work flawlessly.

I got a 6000# Vortex winch off ebay. Their 5000# and 6000# are the same just $5.00 or so cheaper. The weight duifference between a 6000# winch and a 8000# winch about double. I personally don't want to carry all that weight around. I also got the one with the wireless remote. Just a 5000# which is really the same as a 6000# is $185.00 + shipping

Get the 5000# one, it's the same exact one as rhe 6000#. When it came it was labled 6000#. I've used it twice and it worked good. I love the wireless remote (not all come with it).
