Hi
At the moment I am planing a 2.0L swap into my 1.8L Sport (mine is a 1997, AT running 33"). I have a new/used engine from a Europe Grand vitara 2.0L 1999 model (driven 160.000miles) and plan on doing a .20 over bore and total rebuild before the 2.0L goes in. Any info on the swap if some one has done this is appreciated. I am aware of the fact that the coils are different and the intake manifold with electronics. I plan on swapping my 1.8L manifold over to the 2.0L (not sure yet about the injectors), and swapping the 1.8L coils over to the 2.0L.
I have seen comments regarding purchasing headers and cams for the Sport 1.8L here... Would someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction to where I can find/purchase such items? I have searched the internet for over a year (I do feel competent at internet searching) and have never found any one with these products for the Sport 1.8L.
I know that most competent exhaust shops should be able to fabricate a custom exhaust from the exhaust manifold and back, but logic dictates to free up the restriction closest to the head where the heat is most extreme, meaning the exh. manifold/header. That is what I would like to do. I am not to big a fan of custom headers unless the shop has experience in flowtesting and engine characteristics (No such shop in Iceland were I live).
Personally I have contemplated having the head, intake and exhaust manifold Extrude Honed for increased performance. Has anyone tried this and if so how has it come out in regards to power increase and milage?
A little info on me and my vehicle:
Suzuki Sidekick Sport 1.8L - 1997 - AT
33" Bridgestone REVO II tires on Ultra Rouge 17"x8" wheels
4.5" Rocky Road Lift
Rear Axle truss + skid plate
Sky extreme duty idler arm
K & N filter
Lots more mods and more to come.
Vehicle was modified by me and my personal friend and shop manager of Arctic Trucks of Iceland
I am a automechanic (not working as one at the moment)
Bicycle technician
Fitness trainer
Working at one of Icelands largest auto dealerships in the service department (VW, Audi, Skoda, Mitsubishi)
Best regards from Iceland

those sound like awesome trips. from what i have seen iceland looks amazing. wish i could have seen the volcano in action. awesome. i am building a six inch lift long travel system right now for my sport and the rear axle has me worried. i have a nine inch i can narrow to fit but not sure if thats the route i want to go. a high pinion rear would be sweet.

From what has been mentioned on the board in the past the 2.0L block should be a straight swap out for the 1.8L. Just keep all of your old electronics and go.
Someone else can probably back me up on that.

Hi
Has anybody got any more information or done this before, to comment on possible problems?
How about exhaust diameters for the 1.8/2.0L setup? I do have to run my catalytic converter and am thinking of having a new one installed soon in 2.5" diameter but was wondering about stepping down to 2 1/4" after the cat, comments on this?
Does anybody know if the compression is the same or different on the 1.8L and the 2.0L? I do know the engines do not run the same sparkplug. I am not sure if there is just a slight change in heat range or something more.
Can someone tell me the Lbs on the injectors on each engine? One runs red injectors and the other orange. If I recall correctly it is the 1.8L running red and 2.0L orange.
Best regards,
Tryggvi

The injectors should have a part number on them, that will be more useful then the colours.

x2 on this, I'm 100% certain I've read 'somewhere I can't seem to find' of someone putting the 2.0l longblock into a Sidekick Sport model, using the 1.8l intake & exhaust manifolds & harness & ECU & it worked well.

Having your parts Extrude honed won't do much for your purpose. You don't get any benefit until really high rpm's. It is quite expensive and unless you were building a race car that sees prolonged high rpm use, it really isn't worth it.

Try sending CJ a PM, he knows quite a bit about engine swaps on Suzukis.

Hi
My 1.8L engine is running RED injectors with numbers:
6531 on one side.
JS28-2 on the other side.
The 2.0L engine is running ORANGE injectors with numbers:
771981C on one side.
INP-771 on the other side.
1. Does anyone know the lbs pressure on them?
2. Also, is there any danger swapping them if the connecting plugs fit, in terms of impedance?
I do realize that there is most likely a different amount of fuel for each injector color and would like to run the injectors that are closest to suiting my engine purpose. For instance, lets say that the RED injectors have a higher lbs that are on my 1.8L engine and lets also say that the ORANGE injectors might have a lower lbs rating (possibly for fuel milage purposes, if this assumption is correct). Then I would deduct that Running the RED injectors on the 2.0L with the 1.8L intake plus the fact that I plan on a 0.5mm overbore on the cylinders, would be a better idea then running the ORANGE ones. But this is all speculation at the moment since I can't find the lbs rating.
Thanks for your answers and input so far, I do appreciate it.

I would simply run the injectors that match the engine.....run the 2.0 injectors with the 2.0 engine.

The 2.0 injectors are 232cc/min, those are pretty common. The 1.8 injectors are made by JECs and I don't have any information on them, the FSM should have an injector test described that will allow you to calculate the flow rate. The injector flow rate is relative to the size of the cylinder and the amount of torque, I would start with the 2.0 injectors and the 1.8 ECU.

I did this swap last year and it came together smoothly. I stayed with the red injectors since I had the 1.8 ECU and it is working just fine. Wide band is showing good all the way except wot, which is common on any motor. Sage advice-do not replace the crank sensor with aftermarket or you will have to seperate and put a factory unit in. Hope this helps

I've done the same swap last year as well. I used all the electronics from the 1.8 and the intake from the 1.8 all on the 2.0. It ran like a scalded dog! I had 32" tires on mine with a 5 speed and was extremely impressed how it ran down the road. With the A/C on in 5th gear I could easily go 96 mph down the freeway until I ran across slower traffic. Hands down a swap I would do again without hesitation...

Hi
I know this is old and there are a million excuses I have for still not having finished the 2.0L swap into my Sport. I have been busy doing other modifications though :) 5.83 R&P with Front and rear lockers installed! Plus took care of some rust on the front doors, roof and rear door.
Hopefully I am a few steps closer to finalizing this swap. I was mentioning this project on an Icelandic Forum and was told by a forum member that the 1998/9 Grand Vitara 2.0L engine does not have a crank sensor as my 1.8L engine does. I am not sure but think the sensor is positioned on the rear of the crank on my engine. I do not see any sensor on the 2.0L engine I have in my garage. Does any one know more about this? I looked up crank position sensores on Rock Auto for both engines and found the exact same partnumber for them. Any help on this matter is gratly appreciated, thanks.

Some do, some don't - if it's fitted it'll be "behind" the flywheel - it's actually in front of the flywheel when you consider front & rear of the vehicle, but you have to remove the flywheel to reach it.
OBD-II vehicles for the North American market will have them, OBD-I vehicles apparently don't (mine is a 98 OBD-I and does not) - if I'm correct, the Sidekick Sport was a North American market only vehicle (I've often wondered how you got one in Iceland), which would make it an OBD-II - you may have to run with the J20A ECU.

When you do it, take some pictures and post up a how to. I have a 98 sport, and I really want to do the 2.0 swap one day.
