95 Sidekick 4 dr 2wheel drive: coming home last night from work I was shifting gears and it sounded like a rachet under the dash and my pedals freeplay got so bad had extreme trouble shifting gears. Checked adjustment this morning at trans and it hadn't moved. Looked up under dash at where the cable arm goes on the pedal shaft. It looks like it moved as I can see a little shine on the splined shaft. Can I reset that to where it's supposed be and then clamp and tach it in place? If so does anyone have a digi cam that can take a pic of theirs so I know what it's approximate position will be?

I have not had a clutch lever break loose... but I have had many clutch cables go out on my Kicks... I would check the cable between the fire wall and the clutch. Have someone depress the pedal and see if the cable is kinking/twisting up any where under the hood. if you see it moving around you will need to replace it...
Can you post up a pic of your pedal issue you described above? It will give us a better idea of what went wrong.

The linkage on my 97 broke 2 times. The arm that connects the splined shaft with the pedal itself gets weak and starts tearing. I took the whole thing out and welded it up so it would never come apart. That is a weak design in the assembly. That may be your problem. I first thought the clamp part of the arm came loose but it was the whole thing breaking allowing it to come apart.

Ok finally got to check this out. The arm on the shaft has moved, don't know how far it's off. plus the cable has now snapped at the adjuster. Have the new cable ready to put on today. But my question is since the arm has been removed to check the spline, and the cable is also off. Where do I reset the arm at when I install it again? If anyone can take a picture of the relative position of the arm it would be very helpfull !!

I believe it is roughly level with the brake pedal. I'll check when I get home from work if nobody else has posted.
I've had my clutch pedal break on me before, it looks like it had happened before and whomever replaced it do a bad job welding it back together. To avoid pulling the entire dash apart to get at it I ended up welding a camp design on from a parts Tracker we had next to the garage. Be thankful you have that version. :)

I mean the arm where the cable attaches to,you know the splined end up above the skinny pedal.
-
Oh, no idea. When I put mine in I just made sure the cable was tight and called it good.

One thing that might be helpful when you do get the firewall end sorted out is this article on clutch cable setup:
http://www.acksfaq.com/samclutchadj.htm (http://www.acksfaq.com/samclutchadj.htm)
Although it is written for the Samurai, the description also applies to the Tracker/Sidekick clutch as the assemblies are very similar (although the cable is different enough that they are not interchangable with the Samurai...).
I hope that this helps!

Index marks must be in alignment. See attachement

Ok I'll checkl it today. Have to work on it anyway. Third aftermarket EGR valve went again.

It's hard to see on the picture. But there looks like a little punch mark on the shaft. If that's it, then I'm on the mark perfectly. I'll tack it there once I get a reply back yes or no.

Yes there should be a mark on the shaft and a dot on the lever that align.
