Hi everyone!
Last year I bought a 96 Tracker convertable and after some minor body work it looks good and is fun to drive. (5 speed, 4cyl.)
My old Taurus died recently and I am in the market for a new car. I see big incentives on new Trackers, currently $5000.00.
Would I be making a mistake to get one of these for winter use here in Michigan. I am just looking for a realiable ride that is safe on snowy and icy roads. I wont be off roading but occasionally need to go through deep water.
How would it compare in this regard to newer SUV vehicles like Equinox, Trailblazer, or Vue?
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated as I must make the decision in the next few days. ???
Thank you.

4x4 is standard equipment with the Tracker. Slap on some winter tires and you should have no problem what so ever.
Equinox is a uni body over sized wagon. So is the VUE. The Trailblazer costs an arm and leg not to mention massive fuel consumption.
The Tracker is built on rugged, reliable Suzuki technology.

New trackers have HORRIBLE resale value. Last year I had the chance to buy a 2002 ZR2 with 12000 miles on it for $11000. Sticker was around $22,000 for it. I would find a slightly used one if I were you. (Actually I recommend that for any car.)

TrailBlazer is a Truck based vehicle... Nice but different market then the Tracker. I'd split the difference and got for a Decked out Grand Vitara XL-7 maybe last years model so some one else can take the hit. I'm sure you can get $5k+ off of the Sticker on a used one. Used car market is VERY depressed with all the new incentives.
I think the bubble is about to bust and the new car buisness is about to take a major hit.... They can't keep selling them to people who are upside down on their trade in. + with all the programs and finiancing they are giving them away...
The new car sales are out of proportion with the used car sales and now the is the time to buy used... Most people can;t give away a used car right now for all the offers on a new one...

Yeah, that''s what I wound up doing last year I think it was July I picked up my 2000 four door, it's a base model, 2.0 5 speed with few options. just air, cd player and a luggage rack with cross members (I think they're optioal, it was a lease turn in with only 35,000 miles on it and it looked like a 2003!! It was just that clean, underneith, the frame, the motor, everything. It was very well taken care of, I traded in my 90 Trooper with the rotted out frame and only paid $9700 out the door, that's tax, tags, the whole nine yards, plus it was a GM certified used vehicle, so they extend the warrenty. I"m very happy with it, it gets between 26 and sometimes 27 on the highway, runs like a champ, keeps up with traffic just fine, and all I've done this past year and 13,000 miles is change the oil every 3k, that's it, it even has it's original brakes and tires (Unyroyal tiger slicks, I really gotta do something about those, but right now there's still half the tread on them). Hope this helps, DAve ;D

Oh yeah, Equinox and VUE are the exact same car. And 4x4 is only standard in the Canadian market. So don't get a 2x4.
The Tracker (and Suzukis) are "truck" based SUV's also.

Thanks for all the replies!
I need to go with a new tracker in order to use $3,000 I have on my GM Mastercard towards a new GM vehicle.
That would be a total of $8,000 off before bargaining.
I am only considering 4wd, but have never driven 4wd, only the 2wd tracker I bought for $1,500 (slightly damaged). I bought a set of rims and new winter tires for it, but only tried it in the snow once or twice. I imagine the 4wd with the Blizzack tires should handle pretty much anything during a Michigan winter.
I have questions about the heater, defroster, rear defogger and cold starting. Does anyone have any opinions on these?
Thanks again.

Just remember that the added traction you will have will NOT help you stop any quicker, so always becareful and never try to over take something if you have any doubts.

Well, with all the traffic around here its pretty hard to get up much speed even in nice weather. I would prefer the 4wd on snow and ice, just as extra security when heading out in stormy weather. Also I like the idea of a skidplate to protect underside. I think I have heard the the snorkel air intake should be good getting thru the occasional flooded underpasses we experience.
