Title: Help with kick cvshafts!!
Post by: musicfreak147 on October 02, 2010, 05:11:48 PM
Hello everyone,

i've got trouble with my 90 sidekick cvhalfshafts. its driving me insane!!!, i have 235/75/15's
and the shafts are loose behind the steering knuckle and in 4X4 it roars awful VERYloud it quits on acceleration but push in the clutch and it roars i have checked the lockouts and the bearing seem to be fine but i can move the halfshaft at least 1/4 of an inch in all directions very loose and i can't tell how to tighten them that clip is all there is the only thing i can think of is cutting threads into the shaft and trying a nut but i don't know i'm goin nuts.

please help me!

P.S. i have changed the brass inserts in the back of the knuckle?????? :( :(

Have you replaced the shafts recently?
They aren't supposed to move that much,
Did you by chance somehow get CVs from a Sidekick Sport? or GV?

Why do you ask if they came from a Sport or GV?  Different spline count, diameter, length, or something else?

Sport is wider, and the GV has different length long side axle, about 1/4" longer,
so I'm just trying to sort out what's going on

Autozone shafts are all rebuilts, could be a mis boxed one, or is it both sides?

does the splined end of the CV bang around loose in the spindle hole too?
Or does it just move in and out of the spindle?

So where is the 1/4" movement you are having trouble with?

In the same area that you changed the bushings? It shouldn't do that there,
are you sure the CV isn't broken? the shaft moves or no, the whole CV cup part

yeah where i changed the brass bushings in the back the whole shaft moves as far as i can tell its a good shaft boot is good um the cv shaft its self all moves as one unit inside the spindle.

like i said it has got me stumped i guess i can pull one out and take it in and mic a new one see if there is a difference?  or are you thinking a shaft off a whole different vehicle?

I would try to match it up with another store like Napa first,
see if it's the same as the one you have, or if AutoZone has
a bad/wrong part

It sounds like the bushing seat may be hogged out from wollowing around in the spindle. How easy was it to press in the new bushing?  If that's the case, all the new bushings in the world won't make it tight again. You'll have to look for a replacement spindle that hasn't been worn out. You can probably pick up a decent set at the u pull it or even here if you post up "wanted" in the classifieds. Or you can machine out the hole to accept a custom bronze bushing, and cut one or two oversize ones out on the lathe.

I wouldn't think a bronze bushing would hog out a steel spindle, but with enough
heat from friction I guess anything is possible

Bronze wearing out steel?  I don't think so.  The only thing that remotely makes me think that would be possible is Bent said it.

If the bushing got loose in the seat, I could spin, or wobble. I know it's a long shot, but something to check. Yeah It doesn't sound likely, but I have seen cast iron bushing seats enlarged by wallowing bronze bushings. Just on a lawn tractor though :P

I know it's an older post but I believe my tracker is making the same noise.  it howls when I have the hubs locked in but as long as it's under load in 4wd it doesn't make noise.  where did you find the brass bushing that you replaced and how hard was it to press out?  Part number would be great, I can't find it online at autozone or napa.  any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

It's a split bushing pressed lightly into the knuckle, I would go rob them
from a wrecking yard track/kick, I have no idea if you can order them.

I know this may sound crazy but you can sometimes find bushings by size ibetterhardware stores, occasionally a Lowes or HD in the hardware isle in those grey bins. Tractor Supply is another place to look. Or Fazzzio's here in Jersey. Probably wouldn't bother to tell anyone ther it for a "Suzuki." They'll just look at you funny and say " we don't got them." If you can find the correct ID even if the OD is larger you'll  need to oversize the knuckle to get it round again anyway. any machine can make you one too but a salvage knuckle with good parts will probably be cheaper. Got a lathe?

The factory bushings have little dimples on them, I assume to
hold a little grease in them to aid in lubrication
