have a 2001 vitara 2.0 litre. has under 200kms on it.
check engine light (service engine light) came on last week.
was told to disconnect the battery to try and reset the computer.
now the engine refuses to idle, it starts fine and runs fine other than it won't idle. anyone had this problem or point me in the right direction?
thanks

First step is to get the codes read, hard to nail down the problem by guess work. I have a reader in Nanaimo but I'm not sure where you are

First step is to get the codes read,
YES! get the code read before you wipe it from memory. resetting the computer without fixing the problem wont make it go away. might be IAC valve. I had a problem with my 2.0L not idling, but the computer wasn't throwing any codes. turned out to be a fuel delivery issue that worked itself out.

I'm with JoeSteak all the way. I think some of the major auto parts chains will read codes for free (hoping to sell you a part). My money is also on the Idle Air Control valve, but don't assume its busted just because it threw a code and quit. CHECK THE WIRING AND THE CONNECTOR before you buy a new one.

had the same problem with my xl7 after i disconnected the batt, i know it sounds strange but all i had to do was start it and keep the rpms up for a few mins and give the comp a chance to relearn itself.
this may be all it is..... scared the crap out of me when it happend that's for sure
perhaps drive it around for a while as well
